i havent seen a thread discussing this yet since i have been here on bladeforums... well lets hear it. why do you carry? if you do, why did you pick to carry a knife rather than a firearm if you carry for protection? i am also curious as to how many of you carry for protection mainly... as for me, i carry my fixed blade for protection first of all, should i lose my firearm in a fight or be robbed of it before i can draw my firearm... also i carry so i can have a way to cut things if i ever need to cut something... what say you?

I carry a knife and First Defense spray, why not a gun? California, Sacramento... sigh

but the knife is mainly for opening packages, and other random task

wolves.. ahhhh my sympathies sir. i live in the great state of tennessee so we can carry guns here. i carry my glock 26 subcompact 9mm everywhere i go, within the law of course, and i carry a blade with me should i have to resort to it as a last line of defense. also it is useful for cutting things if i should need to...

Purely utilitarian. My first was the old Wave and that really taught me how nice it is to have tools to EDC.

as you are driving open the door and drag it along the asphalt, should grind a whole you can tear open

How else do you open those damned clamshell packages!?

I carry a knife because it is an extremely useful tool. Perhaps the *most* useful tool, and the only tool I consider worth carrying on a daily basis.

Self-defense is a reason for carrying a knife, but it is very low on my list. Why not carry a gun instead? Because a gun is about a billion times less useful. If self defense was a main concern, I would carry a gun as it is better for self defense than a knife. But a knife is far most useful on a daily basis.

I carry purely for survival purposes.

Usually that means utility, but ofcourse it might unfortunetely also mean self-defense with a knife, in which case my knife will become an edged weapon and probably my main tool for defending myself against the attacker.

A tool for survival nonetheless.

Knives are for the uncivilized.

I carry these every day, tactically adapted for use in the true modern, urban environment with interchangeable serrated cutters (mine are black though, obv.):

I could still put an eye out if someone poked me with a firearm or something.

Yeah, but you've got to get a permit and there is a 3 day waiting period.

Well one of those blades looks double edged so they're not legal in NY.

Here in NC you can obtain a concealed carry permit, which I have, or you can carry unconcealed without a special permit (although you do need to obtain a permit to purchase a pistol).
That's right, here in NC you can walk around with a pistol on your hip, like a gunslinger, and it's perfectly legal.

But I don't carry my pistol everyday and everywhere.
Why?
Because (1) I have moved to a place where crime is not really a problem and when I'm home there are firearms readily available, and (2) I cannot carry a pistol in the hospital where I work.
But I do keep a pistol in my truck.

As for why I carry a knife...
Probably because it was the way I was taught.
My father gave me my first knife when I was about 8 or 9 years old, and I have carried one every since (I'm now 40).
My father still carries a knife too.

I carry a knife(s) because I see it as an extension of my body. Knives make up for one of many shortfalls of the Human body design which I believe really sucks when I compare humans to other animals. Our finger nails are useless, and our teeth are limited too. :thumbdn: I use my knife regularly for cutting, opening packaging, grooming and getting those nasty slivers out of my skin. Carrying a knife makes me feel complete as a person and self sufficient. I take great pride in carrying a good knife. A person who carrys a knife is generally speaking a common sence individual. With some knowledge a knife can save your life and the lives of your loved ones when the threat arises. A knife will not jam and never needs reloading. :D I love my knives and most of you on this site love em too. With that said, do yourself a favor and sharpen up your blades and go out and buy another.
