Years ago, I was trying to trim down my pack weight by separating its contents between "needs" and "wants" or essentials vs non-essentials. Part of that thought process led me to explore the "one tool option". Instead of bringing multiple tools, I would bring just one. At that time, I was rocking a Buck 119, a Gerber hatchet, a Cold Steel machete, and a Cold Steel large Bushman, I wanted to consolidate all of that into a single knife. So, as many of us are wont to do when something strikes our fancy, I hit the web in search of some of the best options.
I usually do not allow myself a massive knife budget, so I was looking for something that was in the $100 range or less. My search kept bringing me back to the Becker lineup, particularly the 9 and the 2, it even brought me to these forums (as any Becker internet search undoubtedly will). The thoughts and experiences laid out by the folks here was worth its weight in gold . Now this was years ago and since I was simply lurking then, I cannot recall who or even what reviews ultimately ended up helping me make up my mind. Regardless, the decision was made. I had to have a Becker knife...
In those days, I was very much enamored with the sharpened prybar concept and so the 2 was very appealing. However, the 9 had it in the looks department, I remember thinking, "Damn, that is a fine looking knife!" I also felt that the extra length would serve me better, considering that I was indeed looking for something that would serve me as a "one tool option". So I ended up with the King, my very first Becker, and it has accompanied me on just about every outdoor adventure ever since. Soon after, I ended up getting the 2, and I gifted a 5 and a 10 to some of my very good friends.
I was continuously impressed (still am) with how much of a value that the Becker knives are. It isn't often that you can find a sub $100 knife that will perform to the level that these Beckers do and they do it all of the time. It wasn't until late last year when I joined these forums that I recognized how great a guy Ethan is and how much everyone here respects him. I've even seen firsthand how he has gone above and beyond to ensure that those who have his knives are happy with them. Which ultimately led me to acquire even more of his knives and I went from owning just 2 to owning around 10 or so, I think.
Their incredible value, combined with their rugged durability, their no nonsense design, their friendliness to being modded, and best of all, being backed %100 by not only a great man like Ethan, but by Ka-Bar as well, has produced a very deserved and devoted fan base.
Not a lot of brands can make those same claims. So as a result, I will be a fan of Becker's knives until I am put into the dirt. At the price point and the beautiful level of design, no one should ever hesitate to actually "use" a Becker knife.
