I have trouble explaining it to people.
I'd love to hear if anyone has a clever way of describing it.

I love them because I've carried one since I was 7 and I feel naked without one.
I love them because because I love the artistry of mixing form and function.
I love them because they're our most basic tool thoughout history including now.
I love them because I love tinkering with things.
I love them because they're the most useful tool and most frequent tool I ever use.
I love them because they give me a sense of independance and self-confidence.
I love them because it's a legal self-defense weapon.
I love them because for all these reasons, but, say, at a party if I were to list all of this the person who asked me would have fallen asleep by now.

HONESTLY I don't KNOW why I love them. I honestly don't. I often wonder if there's some deep psychological reason that would take a therapist to dig out why I love them. I just do.

You with me? Do YOU know why?
Does anyone have an ELEGANT answer to this question?

I answered "All of the above". To me the most important reason is because they combine form with function. Usually in a beautiful package, kind of like how some people like fast, good-looking cars. They're way more affordable too. :)

I got my first camping knife when I was 10 ( William Rogers Cut My Way)My first Folder at 12(Hammer Brand, Med Stockman w/ broken main blade)Carried to school and ever since.First Buck at 17.
My knives get used more than anything .

I thought about answering All Of The Above on your poll, but I can't. I may have as many as 6 knives on me, but I don't carry any as a weapon legal or illegal. I live in NYC and don't think for a second I'm not prepared to defend myself, but knives for me are tools, show pieces, handmade works of art and not weapons.

I voted "all of the above", but really I like knives because they are so sharp and pointy and cool!

The fact that someone (man or machine) has taken a hunk of steel and other materials and created a flawless piece of art is just amazing to me. And then I get to take that piece of art and tear it up and use it for what it was built for. :)

Also, I think movies probably played a small part in my love for big tactical knives. Movies like Predator and Rambo boiled my blood as a young fellow because it was just one man and his knife against the world. It stirs the primal beast in us knife fans.

Plus, when I was in the Corps, I was always carrying a knife -- and by God, it just felt badass to always have a knife strapped to my H-harness. That's what I like about knives.

My answer would be, most of the above. I do not carry a knife for self defense and though I will tinker with a knife, I do not consider it to be a particular joy to do so.

I also have to include that I find sharpening a knife to be rather therapeutic, and that like Danbo, I like things that are sharp, pointy and shiny.

partly becaus Ive had one since i was four years old. partly because i use one often, I think most of all I like form, and function!!! :D !!!!!!

Most of my reasons match yours:

1. They are useful tools that make everyday life more convenient. My thumbs are opposable, and my teeth are dull...:)

2. They could save a life in an emergency.

3. The history and technology are interesting, and the artistry is amazing.

4. I have carried one (or more) my whole life, and yes, I feel naked without one. Probably some bizarre thing that a psychiatrist could explain, but I don't care.

The watch I want costs $1000+, so I scratched that and settled for a casio. The car I want costs about $140K, so I scratched that and bought an old econo box. The gun I want cocts about $1200, so I deleted it from my list & bought a cheap .22. The knife that I really want costs only about $65, so I bought it, that's why I like knives....plus I can't really cut stuff without 'em.

Because knives keep me constantly broke.., I can't afford things that are bad for me... :)
