".. We were fishing on a rubber boat when notice growling. It was a big bear on the bank of the lake! We tried to scare him away and hit the water by stick to make a loud sound. But he decide to attack instead. Bear jumped into water, reach the boat and rip apart rubber boat in a seconds. Serge start fighting with bear and screamed his friend to swim away. Fortunately it was not deep and Serge has a ground to fight. Predator tried to hit the man by his paw but missed - just scratch. When the bear open his jaw, Serge by instinct push his arm into it and grasped his tong. This move save his life, bear can not use his fangs to kill. Same time Serge riched his self-made hunting knife and start prying animal in the neck. Wounded bear decide that it is too much price for a snack and retreat into taiga. Serge has his arm broken and belly scratched, but alive..."
Thanks, Vassili.

That fellow had plenty of spunk and sense enough to carry a usable knife, proof that carrying for self protection IS a good idea. The only time I needed a self defense weapon while fishing was a couple of years ago when two flakes were looking for some easy money. I was parked along the Mississippi River in the boondocks north of Burlington, Iowa. Being alone, I must have looked like easy money. Anyhow, looking down the barrel and cylinder of +P hollowpoints changed their outlook and future. I carry a fixed blade also, but that day I was better armed. I don't always pack a sidearm during hot weather, but I never leave home without a blade. About the two would-be robbers? No, fortunately I didn't have to shoot. I also carry some "instant cuff" plastic ties in my truck, since I leave my duty belt and cuffs at home until I go to work. All I can say, two dimwits picked the wrong one that day.
