How do you guys respond?

Sounds like a question your wife or Mother would ask!!

Why do men climb Everest? Because it is there!

Why do I need more than one balisong? Because there are more than one balisong! When I have them all, I'll be done.

I carry more than one knife because I have a love for cutlery and to share it with others who may be interested. I carry up to three most of the time...Current knives; Emerson Commander, Spyderco G10 Harpy and a Hen & Rooster stag pen knife, and off and on the Emerson La Griffe.

Mitch,

I really don't need more than one knife. Actually, I don't even need a knife - I could probably just tear a hunk of meat off the roast and bite pieces off as I hold it with both hands

.

However, as a member of a relatively affluent society, I have gotten use to certain creature comforts; and, those comforts include having a selection of tools to make each task easier to perform, and to have each task performed better by virtue of having the right tools. My knives like everything else are a part of the tools I acquire; and, each knife has specific characteristics which makes it best suitable for a specific tasks. Hence, multiple knives are required to best address the number of tasks I usually perform, or, would otherwise like to be prepared to perform.

And, if you fail to sell them with that line of positioning (B.S.

), just tell them that you are collecting a number of examples representing the diversity of golbal and historical design philosophy for knives. Which will help you to better understand the evolution and distributive diffusion patterns of basic tools.

Lets hope that at least you can baffle them with this line of thought long enough for one of you to suggest a beer (thereby ending further discussion of an otherwise silly issue).

Or you could get literary, with this passage from King Lear where one of Lear's bad daughters questions his need for so many knights in his entourage:

O, reason not the need!
Our basest beggars
Are in the poorest things superfluous.
Allow not nature more than nature needs,
Man's life is cheap as beast's.

When you want long enough you convince yourself you need it.

To convince someone else is another matter.

OPTIONS!
I like OPTIONS!
And that really is the reason I want more than one knife, when all else is said and done.
I love knives, I've always been fascinated with this tool, and as time goes on, I want a larger selection of my favorite tool to choose from. Sooo the collection gets bigger, much to the wife's chagrin, BTW.
That, and knives keep getting better and better all the time, and who can resist that?!

If a person with multiple personalities threatens suicide, is that considered a hostage situation?

It makes the job easier when you have the right tool ie, knife for the job. I have a knife that has 42 high carbon blades on it. Its called a saw blade.

Also, knives have an excellant investment value. They seldom lose value, most make a slow gradual increase, and some grow in value in leaps and bounds. In order for them to retain their value, I have a lot of knives, so that few of them ever show any wear, yet I can use the best that way. If a knife ever gets below say 95% of mint, I usually sell it and buy another new one with the money I got from it.
