i know many of you probly prefer to carry a locking folder to a SAK. i also carry a locking folder over a SAK. i would just like to hear your reasons for your preference. SAK or locking folder?

Either or both, thank you.
I always carry a Vic Classic on my key ring.
Sometimes I carry a larger Vic as an EDC. I have a fondness for the Tinker.
Sometimes I carry a locking folder.
Sometimes I carry an non-SAK slippie.

I prefer Locking folders. Locking folders tend to have better quality steel, better blade shapes and more ergonomic handles. Not to mention the added safety of the lock. However when you have both a locking folder and an SAK, or other form of Multitool for that matter, you maximize your edc potential because you have the tools provided by the SAK/Multitool and the better knife blade of the locking folder. And that is why i try to carry both.

I'm no fan of folding knives in general, but for convenience sake carry one. I find the size and shape of the SAK handle to be generally of no use to me whatsoever, and don't like having to use nail nicks to get a blade out and ready. I also despise slipjoints, so there's another reason for me not to like the SAK.

Generally I carry a non-locking (slipjoint) folder like a Case peanut or Old Timer 33OT jack, or Case Sodbuster jr. or Case trapper. I don't really care too much about locks or lockstrength one way or the other, as I learned early how to use a folding knife properly. I don't have anything against locking folders, but for my uses, a thin, sharp blade like what's on the knives I mentioned (OR on my 84mm SAK) just does the job a lot better than my Spydie Endura or Delica or my Schrade LB7. There's not a lot I can't do with my peanut.

I think that a quality folding knife and a SAK are complimentary. Try to uncork a bottle with a knife. Or open a beer bottle or a can without being afraid of damaging the blade.

dagon, thats a good point. i normally carry a large folder and a smaller one for those places where an "agressive" looking blade will draw un-needed glances. a SAK would definatly be usefull in that aspect.

SAK, because I find I use the tools as much as the blades. Especially the phillips head screwdriver.

Usually, I carry a locking folder because it allows one handed operation, not because it has a lock. Lately, I've been carrying a one handed slipjoint. I'm pretty tickled with the concept.

FWIW, I also carry a small SAK.

A folder to me seems like a "real knife" that specializes in cutting, whereas an SAK is more of a "I do some here, some there" kind of knife.

I regularly carry both a folder (mainly a 4" Voyager) and a SAK (CyberTool 34). I use 'em both for different stuff. Also, on my keychain is a super handy Leatherman Micro.

I carry a locking folder for the sake of safety. Knives are inherently dangerous and there is always the chance of some unexpected, uncontrollable, occurrance that results in the blade closing on your fingers.

I look at it like a seatbelt or fire extinguisher. I hope I never need it, and if I do there's a chance it won't save me, but if I ever need it and it does save me, it's worth it's weight in gold.

I carry both, although I use the slipjoints more. I carry a case peanut for most cutting tasks, an endura for those heavy-duty cuts where serrations/locks are needed, and a vic classic on my keys as backup.

On my daily use, a slipjoint works fine, thus a SAK.

For SD, I can't think a better solution than a stick, so I got collapsible baton. Also got a smaller less than 2" blade locking folder because it's cute and sheepie friendly.
