Why does quality vary between models?

Long post - sorry. Don't misunderstand me, Benchmade knives are my favorite, and I just bought 3 in the last week. I will continue to buy them.

I have been unsuccessful buying Benchmade via the net (over the past 8 years) due to quality issues, so I have resorted to brick and mortar and pretty much full retail. I really need to handle and inspect them before buying.

One and a half weeks ago I went out looking for some new knives. I wanted a 940, a 950, a 755, and a 746. I went to 3 different stores. I handled 3 755's, 3 746's, 2 950's, and 1 940.

Of the 3 755's, all 3 had some type of issue - 2 had very noticeable vertical blade play, and the 3rd was solid, except the clip was bent literally .25 of an inch away from the handle. I had to pass on all 3, esp

Of the 3 746's, 2 handle vertical blade play and uncentered blades. I purchased the 3rd one.

Of the 950's, one had an uncentered blade such that the blade hit the liner when closing or opening. I even requested that the guy behind the counter try to tighten the pivot bolt to see if centered it. It did not work. The second was actually a 950-1. It is nearly perfect, so I bought it. I prefer the 950, but I also like the 950-1, so I bought it.

I only got to handle 1 940. I bought it - overall quality was good - lockup solid, blade centered. After some time at home, I noticed that the grind towards the tip is off on one side compared to the other. It makes it look like the tip is bent. Looking at it from above, on the left, it goes straight to the tip. In the right, it curves very slightly as you get to the tip. It is relatively minor, and most people wouldn't notice. I accept it.

I have had countless other episodes with Benchmade knives - all the way back to 1998 - at both Brick and mortar and via the net. I have had to send several back. I have well over 20 Benchmades, and almost all have a very minor issue (such as a blade slightly off center, a scale that doesn't line up perfect with a liner, a spacer that sticks out too far), but they are what I would consider acceptable. I can't be too picky when it come to a production knife. However, vertical blade play, a bent clip such as the one on the 755, a blade off center enough to rub against a liner are unacceptable. 4 or 5 of my liner locks even have developed blade play with minimal use, and they have been retired well before they should have been.
I bought a Morpho that was literally missing screws and the spacer fell out when I opened the knife. Back it went. The next one from another website had the clip bent out so far it was no longer useful. I went to bend it back, and the titanium snapped. I ordered another from Benchmade and eventually got it resolved. I have read about others that have had no problems, and I am surprised.

Thoughts?

I've been collecting Benchmades for a while now, and i'm basically moving on from them for the exact reasons you state.

Like you, I like benchmade knives but have been discouraged at times by the poor quality. I think there is a simple explanation--increasing quality will require either:
-some kind of quality control system to prevent bad knives from getting out
-some machinery to replace people or better training (to reduce the number of bad knives made)

Both cost money and I'd guess the person in charge of operations decided the profit from the higher quality knives would not offset the cost of QC or an investment to improve quality. That may change with pressure from other knife companies though.

FWIW In the past few months I have bought 5 or 6 benchmades online and they were all excellent.

Only own one and it's great, no problems. The two before it both went back to Benchmade. This was some years back, too. Of all the Benchmades I've owned, I've had very few problems. But again, this was all some years back.

I love me an AXIS lock knife and own about 20 right now all bought at different times and different places, sight unseen. I haven't had any of the problems you mention and have only had a few that weren't hair popping sharp. I don't consider myself a lucky person but I guess I must have lucked out so far.

Sorry about your problems but on the bright side Benchmade has one of the best warranty departments in the industry and will fix most anything, including things they say aren't covered under warranty.

I bought four. Had problems with all of them. The warranty dept couldn't seem to fix them. I've moved on as well. No more benchmades for me.

Glad I saw this. Right now trying to decide between a BM 580 in M390 or a Spyderco Persian. Don't know overall which company has better quality control.

Doesn't matter if it's Benchmade or anything else. I found differences usually in all similar factory blades , some bad and some not so bad.

If you order on-line, you can't handle it or compare but when in a Brick&mortar store , I always ask to see a couple of the same and check them out. Most salespeople don't mind. If they ask why , I explain that I want a smooth one but check the similar knives out for everything. That way , I can pick the better of the 2 or 3. On-line, you get what you get.

+1. It's not just Benchmade, if you buy enough knives you'll get a problem one from any company. Benchmade quality in my experience hasn't been significantly worse that Spyderco or Kershaw's.

I think it all comes down to any mass produced product will have lemons that get out and then problems that us perfectionists, for lack of a better term, just will not accept while the average Joe wouldn't even notice.

The only problem I've ever had out of Benchmade that really bugs me is of the 4 I own so far only 1 was nice and sharp. That isn't a big deal for me but it is annoying after being spoiled by Spyderco's always sharp as hell blade. My Nitrous Stryker isn't dead center but it isn't too close to rubbing a liner or anything like that.

After numerous quality control issues I came to the same decision.
Too many examples of things that just should not have made it past any decent level of QC. Even a Gold class one!

The dissappointment and hassle factor just got to the point it was not worth it, and sucked all the pleasure out of any purchase.
I wouldn't have minded paying near MSRP if I was able to handle and inspect the BM before purchase.
Unfortunately, even in an area as large as metro Atlanta, there aren't really any decent knife shops. Which left me with the occassional gun show, or Blade each year.

Really a shame since I wanted to love BM, but I moved on.
Primarily to Spyderco.

I fully agree. The last two Benchmades I bought were not 'cherry picked', but bought on-line. The knives were perfect in every way. Strangely enough, some of the best blade centering I have found was from Gerber. Go figure.

Unfortunately, my last benchmade experience put me off. I wanted a bone collector... the first one I got was absolutely horrid, the second was moderately bad, and I finally ended up giving up and hand picking one at my local bass pro shop.

I've had really good experiences with Benchmade over the years...I suppose I must have bought maybe 11ish? five minigrips, a gravitator, a 960, a benchmite, 480-1 shoki, a morpho, a 41mc...hmm...seems like there were more, but that's all I can remember for now.

Anyway, for the most part, I've had the best QC from Benchmade out of the big three. I've only had two problems...my morpho didn't latch well and ended up cutting my hand pretty badly as a result (it popped open with just the slightest pressure), but was fixed by the warranty dept...the 480-1 was miserable, with noticeable vertical play and a blade so off centered it rubbed, and that's a nearly $200 special edition... it's back from Benchmade but it's being forwarded from my other house so I haven't seen it yet.

I've moved on from Benchmade, for the most part, mostly due to the lack of designs that interest me. Kershaw exclusively had the best folder designer in the world for a decade or so, KO, so I ended up buying all his stuff, and now they have G&GH so I buy all their stuff...

I'll give benchmade another shot next time they produce something I can't live without...the 755 is pretty intriguing...
