I don't know why but the USA always seems to get the better end of the stick when it comes to availability of knives, makers, steel, and most of all price.

For example a Cold Steel Trailmaster off Ebay.COM would cost aroung $100 to $120 delivered. Yet for the poor Northern Ireland boy that I am it cost me about £80 if I'm very lucky. Anyone have any idea why I get it so hard :D ??????

There are a few reasons. First is the additional shipping costs. Then, if you are purchasing from a brick and mortar store, you are paying a high markup. Add to that the stupidly high VAT.

That is fairly high though. What is 80 quide now about $160? It would probably have to do with shipping and your VAT.

Socialism is expensive !!! There probably are some protective tariffs too.

Why do I pay more for Guinness and Bushmills in the US than folks in Ireland?

How much do you pay for guiness? We would pay about the equivalent of $7 a pint

I thought I would ask as last time I was in America I could buy Becks (brewed in Germany) cheaper over there than I can do here, when the UK is only a few hundred miles away and Nevada is a few thousand...

Nevada---as in Vegas???

If you were in Vegas--you were drinking gambling subsidised beer.

Cheap drinks to loosen you up-----and your wallet.

I visited Ireland a couple of years back and was dismayed to have to pay 4 Euros for a pint of Guinness or Murphys. At the time that was about $6 US. It's the extremely high taxes that Europe has on everything.

ireland as in the South as we call it up North is expensive the most expensive country in Europe I think. Still annoys me like anything that you can get cheap knives and I can't :D . I might move to the U.S.A :D

Even more expensive than Norway? The gas price here is almost $8 a gallon, and we are the worlds third largest exporter of oil :p

If the Democrats get their way here in the states, we will be right up there with you.
Nothing the government can give you was not taking from you or someone else.

At the pace we are going it will be just as expensive here soon. We are getting very socialized.

Socialism? In Ireland? I must be missing something here.

I have never been to Ireland but being that they are part of the UK I would have thought they would have national health care and the same sort of taxes they had when I was in England such as the VAT sales tax and tv tax and room tax ect ect. I may be wrong though and that would be great for Ireland if I was.

Being an amateur historian I found this kind of discursion quite tiresome and pointless thourgh the net, because things are not quite black or white as some people like to think.

High and illogical taxes are not equal to socialism. My homeland unfortunately has her fair share of socialism and believe me, it had nothing to do with the government type in Ireland.

OK, I'm really here to talk about knives, so I try hard not to speak about politics here.

I've noticed that a lot of times when people in the US and people in Europe are discussing politics, their definitions vary enough to cause quite a bit of confusion. This seems to be especially true with grey terms such as socialism.

Now we have to turn this discussion back to knives or the pole cat will give us the Gentle Beings speech.

Knives are cheaper in the US because we are ubber cool. :)
