Am I missing something obvious?

They used to. The old style Cold Steel serrations were just about like every one elses. Six or eight years ago they changed to the new style. At the time they stated that they felt the new style provided a smoother cut and was easier to control.

My thinking is that they do it that way so when the serrations wear down, you have to buy a new knife.

Yeah, when the serrations get dull and the crappy plastic clip breaks off your Voyager it's time to buy a new knife, which in I myself did. In fact I bought several. Funny how none of them are made by Cold Steel, have serrations or plastic-handles...

PS. I like Cold Steel fixed blades, but they really need to move into the year 2000 with some updated folder designs and materials. (And that crap balisong-type certainly doesn't qualify.)

I agree with MNH, I believe the reasoning was to provide a smoother cut than larger serrations provide. The fine serrations can be sharpened pretty well with a Spyderco triangular file. I use a 10X magnifyer to make sure my angle is correct, and ONLY SHARPEN the ground side! Flat file the back side to remove the burr and lightly touch up the serrations! The large serrations can be touched up with a round file. The "files" I refer to are man-made 600 grit ceramic-like files made only by Spyderco.
I have learned to sharpen serrated knives, but I haven't learned to like them! They are useful for cutting extremely tough stuff, like plastic and nylon. Other than that, I think they are for people that can't sharpen a knife!(sorry, it just sliped out!)

it is. Customer service themselves told me that - haha

The Voyagers have metal clips now. As far as the serrations. They can be sharpened. It is just a matter of finding the right tool. The handles are sturdy. Hell they make gun frames out of zytel.
