Why don't I hear more about the "R" nishijin sprint run?

This looks like a really nice knife but I don't ever see anything about it. Is there something wrong with it that it doesn't get much attention?
Also, which has more cutting edge the Caly 3.5 or the "R"?

I've got one and It's a nice knife, but based off an old design. It's got a smaller spyderhole and old-style jimping. It's nice but I prefer my Caly 3.

The "R" is a very nice knife. I had one till last week when in a moment of weakness I sold it to another Spyderco fan. Now I've got to buy another. I miss it.
The handle is larger than the Caly which I found gives more control but the cutting edge is similar in size, just feels larger.

Caly 3.5 on top, "R" directly under.

Barman1,

That is a great comparison shot and very pertinent to me right now. I gave a (really) good friend of mine, my ZPD Caly 3.5 and figured I'd try my luck with Superleaf as I like a bit bigger but, it slides under the 3 inch cutting edge issue (for some laws) whilst still being substantial.

I really like it but it is bulky and it's 'horns' on the bird-beak end and when folded the top edge of the handle near the compression lock, were proving uncomfortable in my pocket so I took the the Wet & Dry paper and rounded them out;

This changes the knife only very slightly but does make it more comfortable for me to carry - YMMV. That said for office carry it is still a serious lump of knife so...

...you guessed it - I ordered a replacement Caly 3.5 over the weekend :) . This time just the regular old VG10 version but I get on okay with Spyderco's VG10 so I'm good with it... I considered the Nishijin but the slender proportions of the Caly 3.5 were an advantage in this instance and I for one LOVE the deep carry, wire clip. So those factors clinched it for the Caly 3.5. I look forward to welcoming one home and into my collection/ EDC rotation!

Cheers,

Ben

I'm not sure what it is about the Nishijin R. I've got one, but I think I have carried it once. It's a nice solid knife with decent features, but for some weird reason, it just doesn't speak to me, and I have no idea why not.

I agree that it's a nice knife, but it just kinda looks "in between" a bunch of other Spydies. It's kind of like a Caly, it kind of has a PM2ish blade. I agree that's it's not something you can easily put your finger on.

I like it, but haven't carried it a lot. It's a pretty knife, but it's also one of the heavier knives I have and it's lock is pretty stiff. For a VG-10, Glass Fiber knife, I tend to carry the Lum Chinese Folder more often.

Cynic, I had missed your review when I was doing a search. It was very informative. I am sorry to hear that the glass fiber handles are smooth. I was thinking that the R's scales would be like the carbon fiber on the Bradley folder and have some grip to them. I don't know if the smooth scales are a deal breaker for me or not. I might not know until I handle one.

Other than the scales, It is just about what I am looking for. I love the blade shape but I have both the Stretch and PM2 already. I want a Stretch with G10 handles, really. I thought that the R might be close and, except for the scales, it really is.

When I received mine, I found that the miniature "diamond plate" is an illusion. It's smooth. Beautiful, but smooth.

I gave mine to a friend.

John
