Just a dumb question
Aside from my scale attachment points and my Lanyard hole if I have one. why do I see a lot of extra holes drilled in the blank???? Is it to reduce weight to make the blade more tip heavy or is it for better Glue dispersion and strength of the scale to blank Joint or both?
Thanks Jerry

Not a dumb question at all! You are correct....it's both. Weight reduction/balance and epoxy bridges.

Yes on all accounts.

Keep in mind as the blade gets longer drilling to many holes in the handle area makes for a more tip heavy knife.

That is part 2 of my question. when you say Ballance what does that really mean???? is it like balancing a tire???? put or remove weight where needed. so, if I lay the blade across my finger at say my plunge line do I want it to balance there or move finger further towards the tip to make it a slightly blade heavy. Then drill tang holes till she balances. I guess my question is where we establish the fulcrum of the balance point?

It means if you want it more tip heavy lighten the handle, if you want it less tip heavy do not lighten the handle.

You can not measure where the blade balances until you complete the knife. How much to remove or keep comes from experience.

Thanks for the advice I was going as far as making weight that replicate my scales on average and hardware. but I'll keep practicing and see what happens. Thanks For all your guys help.

I just finished a santoku chef's knife and put quite a few holes in the handle. When the balance is perfect it almost feels weightless in your hand. It was a gift for a professional chef so it becomes important when it's used for hours. It's a bit of a guestimate since I drilled the holes before heat treat and so the grind wasn't completely finished and the handle material wasn't on yet. It came out about right.

Smaller knives are always going to be a little handle heavy, which is a good thing, they feel like they want to stay in your hand.

Yep D all the above!
