Why EDC small fixed blades?

It has never made much sense to me to carry (EDC) a fixed blade that was under 3".
What can you do with it that you can't do with a folder of same size blade, of equal quality?

A 3-" folder when closed, being maybe 4" total, and a 3-" fixed blade, being somewhere between 6" to 7" total.

Everything else being equal, the more discreet carry of the folder and the convenience of not dealing with a sheath, would seem more desirable.

i guess because of the full tang construction, its much more stronger, so you can use it in situations that would breeak/damge the lock on your folder.
i understand your point, i carry rarely small fixed blades, just because of the convenience of similar blade lenght folders offer in carrying.

There's one very good reason for carrying small fixed blades: there is no lock that can fail!

Kind regards,

Jos

Also, there are places where the legality of a locking folder is questionable.
But in at least some of those same places, you can legally carry a small fixed blade.

Most of the time I carry a small fixed blade,it is in the Fall to Winter,'cause I'm wearing heavier clothes..I like to put a small fixed blade in my top button down shirt pocket
A small fixed blade is good for harder tasks, that will wear on a folders pivot

But recently, another reason came to me...carrying a small fixed blade to the beach, swimming /wading/fishing,etc
No pivot, for sand to foul up..SS fixed blade of course though

1: Easier and faster to access and put away
2: Don't have to worry about water and dirt getting in the moving parts because there is none.
3: Sturdier

Reason 2 is huge.

No lock to fail-fast-morecomfortable, for some people

Agreed. I had a Wenger Classic last week at the beach, and now it's quite hard to open, despite several cleanings.

I carry a small fixed blade daily at work, and carry the same knife for backpacking and hiking:
It's small enough to fit into my pants pocket and be carried with discretion.
It's much less expensive than a folder of similar quality - no moving parts.
It's safer.
Much lighter than a similar-sized folder - no springs, liners, lock mechanisms, etc.
Easier to clean, more hygienic.

Hope that helps with your question,
-Bob

I carry small fixed blades all the time. Lately it's been a BRK&T TUSK in a horizontal sheath. It rides at about 1:30 at my waist. I can pull the blade out one handed, use it, and put it back in the sheath one handed, whenever I need it.

Other reasons; easy clean up, and stronger tool.

And it stays there?

Yeah, you know, like a flannel shirt with a button.flap pocket..A Tom Krein TK-1 or a Charles May Bob White fit right in there nice,I like it on my left side.
Absolutely!

Also, they are pretty damn cool. so many configurations, endless custom possibilites at a relatively low price. Among all the other reasons mentioned........

I carry a small fixed blade custom most of the time. Nothing much to go wrong and easy to clean.

Folders are broken knives, right?
That statement has had me looking into a small fixed blade. Hard to get that out of my head...

Just trying to figure out if it is legal in GA.

I'm a real fan of small fixed blade knives myself. I carry one whenever I can, along with the slip joint which is always in my pocket. The fixed blade is sturdier and that comes in handy now and then. It also gives me an excuse to carry two knives! :D

Aha, I see. Thanks. Even with button-down pockets--even with BDU shirts--I sometimes find things I put in there, like tools, come poking or even flying out (ie: like when I'm working). But I guess if you're not bending down or hunching too much it's not bad.

But in SC carrying any fixed blade inside a city limit is illegal. No limit now on folder size but straight edges are Verboten!!

All of the aforementioned are my reasons also. Lately I've quit carrying lock-blades altogether. I don't want to worry about a pivot, lock, blade-play, or sand, etc. Now it's a small fixed blade and a slip-joint and that's it. The slippie can do the light stuff and then it's straight to the fixed blade for anything rougher. This also lets me indulge more in my often neglected love for the good old slip-joint. Belt carrying a small fixed is just about as comfortable as it gets. I wear my shirt over it. If I have to go tucked then it's Necker time.
