Why I Choose a 17 vs a 16 w Pics

I really like my 17. I think it is going to be a great hunting blade for me. I looked hard at the 16 and I like the design. However, the harder I looked the more I felt like I "already had" a 16.

I know Cold Steel and especially their marketing don't get much love around here, but I have really enjoyed my old Master Hunter in Carbon V. It is a good quality knife and I have used it on a lot of hunts with great results. I looked at the specs and realized that the BK 16, especially in its full flat grind form (sorry to bring it up C_Tanner) is really similar to the Cold Steel Master Hunter. I liked the look of the clip point on the 17 and already having a drop point CS Master Hunter was what tipped me over the edge to getting a 17. Check out the side by sides for the CS Master Hunter and BK 17. I like the handle ergos better on the Becker, but do wish it was slightly thicker (I am thinking about adding liners). The CS kraton handle is decent enough. For a hunting knife I also like the more minimal/smaller sheath on the CS vs. the bulkier BK sheath. That being said, I am not trying to hate on the BK tweener sheaths, I actually like them pretty good and don't have any major issues with them.

I drew a great deer tag this fall and will be packing my 17 along. I think the clip point will let me get into the tighter spaces when caping the head that a drop point blade wouldn't. I drew the same hunt back in 2010 and ended up taking a decent buck after some "technical difficulties" kept me from taking couple bigger ones I had seen. This year I am hoping that my BK 17 is my good luck charm and that I can connect on one of the big boys.

That's a great looking 17, and a great muley. I really need to visit out West during deer season and take a muley, I just hunt Whitetail.

The sheath on the 17 is good for pack carry, straps on nicely, but I agree it's a tad bulky for belt carry. Luckily that's easily ''fixed'' ;)

I really enjoyed using the 17s, I cant wait to get my own

Dax, I think you will be hard pressed to find a better game knife than that 17. I know mine will be my go to game knife from now one, and the little critters I already trussed up, think it will be a great blade too.

DaxMan, good call on the 17.
Nothing wrong with a Master Hunter in Carbon V.
First deer I killed here in TN, I dressed with that knife.
Same steel as the old Camillus Beckers, BTW.

Cold Steel used to make great knives. My guess is, they got greedy and just started putting out lots and lots of cheap junk that snaps in half. The old stuff WAS good. The Carbon V SRK was another bombproof knife.

And since you mentioned me, I have nothing against FFG. My MKI is one of my favorite knives. That whole rant was based only on looks and someone screwing up all the remaining knives I liked...not that there was anything functionally wrong or wrongly designed with what Ethan decided was best. Anyway....

Like Biscuit said, the recent BK10LEs were made of this same steel, as I recall.
