Why I decided to make an SAK my traditional EDC

I have been buying and carrying traditional folders for several years and carrying them religiously as my EDC. I went from a few years of carrying nothing (mostly due to the 9-11 BS), to carrying a medium Case Congress knife for whittling (which helped me smoke less), and then onto other Case knives. I eventually discovered the really well made USA Winchester knives (sometimes known as the "Black Box" Winchesters), which were made by Queen. It was not long until I discovered the fantastic Great Eastern Cutlery knives, and I was suddenly hooked on all those wonderful and well-made traditional folders.

Around Christmas of 2013 GEC came out with their very sleek Radio Knife, with a combination bottle opener and screwdriver blade. I was suddenly reminded of how handy a Swiss Army Knife was, and remembered I had a slew of them. I decided to start carrying one again, just for kicks. I was certain in a few days I would be back to my more traditional and slightly less utilitarian knives. I remember eating some ribs and needing a toothpick during this time, and boy was I glad to have one on my knife (a Swisschamp). I also had a need for a file to file down a sharp edge on toy for my daughter, and there it was on my SAK. My other daughter got a splinter, and the tweezers came to the rescue. I needed to crimp a loose chain a bit, and the pliers were there to do the job. I wanted to measure something, and the ruler was right there. I was looking at some jewelry and could not tell if it was real gold, and the magnifying glass was there to show me it was.

Needless to say, at this point, as I approach 50 years in age, I find it pretty darn useful to have all of these great tools in my pocket whenever I need them. I went back to my plain folders for a bit, and found myself missing the SAK much more than I ever missed the plain folders. The one thing I missed on my other nice folders was the gorgeous stag handles on some of my favorites. I am a sucker fro nice stag. Once I discovered that, with a little patience and looking, I could have my favorite SAK with stag handles, I decided to make the change, and made my SAK my EDC.

What is strange is that years ago I always carried an SAK exclusively, and really only stopped when airports and lots of other places started searching me for knives. When I travel by air, I now check my baggage and knives. Most other places don't search people like they used to, so I carry a knife everywhere I go now, and it is an SAK, which most people do not view as a weapon anyway.

Nice job on that and what a novel idea! Funny thing is even though I swear by the amazing usefulness of SAKs I never get partial to any specific one only because I lose one every now and again or wear out blades and break the tips of the tools and then conveniently move along to a new one. By new, over the past 50 years, that merely means another Spartan.
I've heard tell you can send SAKs back to the factory and they'll rebuild them (free?) but have never explored that avenue and consequently have managed to accumulate an entire box of damaged and broken ones. Maybe someone can confirm or deny that that factory service exists.
Now in your case Victorinox would get a genuine surprise out of having your baby arrive for blade or tool service.

That's a beautiful burnt stag scale. I agree with you, about it being very useful, and not scary.

Yes, it is true that you can send them back for a rebuild. They charge $5 per knife to cover shipping and handling, but they will literally make it look like a new knife again. I sent some in because I had a bent blade, and they replaced the blade, replaced the scales, and sent it back with the old scales included. Basically for 5 bucks, you get a new knife back. I have not asked them to service my stag yet, and am not sure What would happen. All I have had serviced is the plastic scaled models.

One thing I will warn you about is do not ask them to sharpen the knife. In fact, tell them NOT TO SHARPEN. They use a hand grinder and really butcher the edge with it. The original factory edge is done with a laser. I just re sharpen mine on my Spyderco Sharpmaker, which does a great job.

Wow, that is some gorgeous stag on that SAK!!!:thumb up:

But you hit on an undeniable truth; we could drop a SAK in our pocket and go the rest of our lives not really needing another pocket knife. It will do anything most of us need of a pocket knife, but includes some tools that let it go way beyond the scope of anything from Case, GEC, or other knife manufactures. And I own Case GEC, and other pocket knives that I love. It's a battle of wants vs needs. Whim vs logic.

Does Victorinox make many models with stag as an option?

Usually carry one of each so both sides of my obsession are covered but I EDC'd a Pioneer for 20 years or so and along with a Champion I carried in my camera bag (with me constantly), I was never wanting for anything knife related. As I have gotten older I have become more nostalgic and have split my pocket time between a trad slipjoint/lockback and a Pioneer/Farmer/Soldier. Love both.

If someone said pick one to use the rest of your life, the choice would be among SAKs (Celledor vs ALOX). Just too useful.

I've been carrying a multi-tool (sak, leatherman, or Germany kind) along with a traditional knife for a over a year now to, it occurs to me sometimes that the only thing my traditional did was get fondled, while the sak had a busy day, on the other hand the transnationals sure can cut still to when i want to :)

I think it's still safe to say i'm caught between both worlds :)

good on ya!

All of my Stag Victorinox models are factory stag, but I do not believe they make any with stag anymore. They made a number of them with stag in the past. I own several Swisschamps in stag, as well as a Champion (all factory stag). They made several other models, which are quite rare. They also made some models with buffalo horn handles, and I have a few of those as well. Again, they apparently no longer make them with horn either. I have found mine by hunting around auction sites and general surfing.

Wow that is a beautiful knife. Love that stag. After carrying saks nearly exclusively for a few years I got back into traditionals for edc. Mostly carbon steel with bone scales. I still carry a classic on my keyring everyday.
I wonder sometimes why I don't just go back to a sak. They can do many things my more traditional knives can't and while the carbon steel blades do hold a edge better than a sak, I have never been let down by a sak blade. Might have to sharpen it at the end of the day but they have always gotten me through the day no problem.
Yeah saks are great edc knives.

I don't think there are many. The Huntsman came with stag scales in the form of the Archer, and the Champion came with stag some 40 years ago. There may be others, but they don't appear to be common. That stag sure does add some flavor to a SAK, though.

Nice looking knife. Great to find a carry that works for you.

SAKs are not the only multi function knives. There is also the US-style camper and the German style camper.

The Böker is an amazing 'looker' but also about 10x the price of an average SAK.
