was talking to my wife about the knives i just ordered off the web specials and it got me thinking why i like Buck.
i've gone through the years with cheap knives not thinking there was a difference except i always liked the victorinox models (also collect them now) i had and an old 450 protege. was gifted a 184 buckmaster and a couple old 110s so sent em all in to the "spa" as some of ya say at Buck and they came back like new.
while trying to learn more about the buckmaster, 110 and protege i had found this page and you guys talking about some web specials. saw some that were inexpensive and some "nice ones" to me that weren't too much of a splurge so got em. was blown away in the difference Buck's were compared to the cheap knives i always bought.
read a lot on here and contacted Buck for some advise on what i use my knives for and what models would serve well and gradually started replacing my cheap knives with Bucks. the level of service i got was as if i had 1000 of them or were looking at $400+ knives.
another round of specials came out and bought a few more and the rest is history. i don't argue they're aren't equal or better knives..but what i do argue is for my purposes (good users/value with some "nicer" models available to enjoy talking about/showing over some Gentlman Jack) the combination of usa made (though even price matched china imports quality is above the competition), value (price for performance/fit finish/wtty) and customer service has lead me to have a dresser full of Bucks now (and the wife saying "ya outta get a display piece so ya can use that dresser").
am still a newbie so don't know all the date stuff or history or different variations but it's nice that i know a few models i really like (500/112/301 along with the vantage/paradigm/sirus and just about all the fixed blades) and i can grab a few "special" ones directly from Buck without breaking the bank. and with a user of each it has more meaning to have a special version of that to me then a standalone supernice knife that doen't get any use. and for standard production (aside from the offerings of Victorinox) i can get my hunting, collecting, camping/hiking, edc, one hand open and kitchen needs/wants met all within Buck's lineup.
i collect the ones i like. if they go up in value great for my kids if they sell them after i'm gone. but the real purpose for me is to enjoy just a bit of the nicer side of knives without sacraficing the kids college! and it's nice finding a few duplicates to order and put aside for the next few Christmas presents as they get a bit older.
really dont see any other knife company doing what Buck does. and the people at Buck i've dealt with are just fine examples of what's good which is what really makes the difference to me.
