Every now and then I realize that there is a knife I never think about, but which I would really miss were I to lose it. One of those knives is my Spyderco Mini-Dyad with black Micarta handles. I really like this knife for a few reasons. First, it weighs very little due to its small size, and is easy to carry in shorts or lightweight pants without a belt. Second, the micarta handles and black coated (though slightly worn) clip make it look classy enough for dressy carry. Third, the small size makes it relatively sheeple-friendly, while the two blades each pack more than enough cutting power for light work such as box-opening, nail-trimming, and whittling. The ergonomics of the knife are such that it fits my hand very well, even though it is much smaller than most of my knives. The only way I can see to improve upon this design is to use a better steel. ATS-55 is fine, but I find VG-10 resists rust better and takes a keener edge. I understand this knife is no longer available in micarta, and that is really a shame, as I feel that this handle material allows the knife to be worn with pride in any situation, while FRN, though practical, lacks the same panache. Anyway, these are just a few of my thoughts on what is, I think, an underappreciated Spyderco model.
