So I haven't really told anyone, but things have been a bit tough here lately. About 6 days ago my wife's grandmother went in to have an angioplasty done, and they told her she had to have open-heart surgery to bypass two arteries. She had that done, but then wasn't recovering right, and ended up crashing. They revived her, and she stayed intubated for about 4 days because her vitals wouldn't return to normal. They were keeping her sedated. She's 70 years old.
Last Wednesday, my father went to the restroom at work and urinated what appeared to be pure blood. He went into shock, but was able to regain his wits and call my mother, who works at their Doc's office. A day later he had developed crazy chills and a bad fever. He was also incredibly run down. He took some antibiotics over the weekend, but still stayed pretty sick. Monday afternoon the PA told him to go to the ER. He and my mother were there til 6am, when they admitted him to the hospital after finding abnormally high kidney functions AND Pneumonia.
His mother died of kidney failure about 15 years ago. Pops is 53.
Monday, my wife and I went to a Doc visit and were told that the baby didn't have enough amniotic fluid and that that, coupled with her chronic (family history) hypertension could cause preeclampsia. He told her she needed to be drinking at least a gallon of water a day and monitoring her BP. Today, during day two of our state examination (which the kids need to pass in order to graduate...it's a HUGE deal here) she messages me that her BP is 190 over 36. The Doc tells her to go to Labor & Delivery, and that she may have to be checked in...
I'm trying to hold it all together and whatnot, so I get a replacement proctor for the rest of the examination, and haul ass the 40 miles to the hospital. I meet her there, and they get her in a room and hooked up to monitors. The baby sounds happy and healthy, and find out that her BP is showing 116 over 26, and that she's fine to go home. While there, Natalie tells me her grandmother is OFF the tube, and that she's looking MUCH better. Then, I call my mother and she tells me Pops has been released and is going home. :Whew:
I get Natalie home, and as we're pulling up, the neighbor from across the street walks over with a postal delivery. Seems someone sent me a surprise. I get into the house and open it up, and found a great box of cigars from one of them thar Caribbean countries.
A great hog from out west--whom I have grown to consider a friend--somehow either knew I needed a pick-me-up, or--out of the kindness of his heart--decided to hook a brother up.
Either way, it was a cherry on the top of a week full of stress-inducing vicissitudes. My pops is home and feeling better, Abuelita is improving, Wifey is fine (albeit drinking water like a V8 at the pump, and peeing every five minutes), the test is DONE, and I have a box of great smokes to add to the humidor.
My friend: Thank you very much. Whether you intended it or not, your surprise was a great lift. I appreciate it very much.
The people here are what make this little hobby as great as it is. Thanks, all.
Oh...and here's a little bit of Busse (and others) content to at least make it LOOK like I'm keeping things on track.
