I really love my Sog S1 Bowie, as i already posted in the "best Sog thread" one of the reasons is that it scares the crap out of non knife people when i show it to them, another reason is the shape of the blade also the leather handle , i could go on.....anyhoo....one day my brother in law to be, came round and my wife says "show him the bowie" so out comes the S1 . As soon as he clapped eyes on it his face went into an expression of shock and fear " what do you need that for" he screamed...." well you just never know" i replied.....i handed it to him and he was instantly transformed into a knife wielding badass, holding the knife very akwardly and making weird jerky stabbing gestures towards an invisible enemy......" Is it sharp" he asked....."Very sharp" I replied.....just at that very moment, before i could stop him, he ran his thumb right along the edge to the tip......by now my jaw was on the floor.....he lifted his thumb up with a look of horror on his face....I was expecting to see red stuff but instead what i saw was freaky..... instead of cutting himself he managed to completly shave his thumbprint off right down to the tender sticky layers of skin underneath.....no blood at all....."F*** me" he says......"Told you it was sharp" i replied......his hand went straight in his pocket and he sat there all embarrased refusing any medical help and i was left with a big silly grin trying my hardest not to laugh as i removed the sticky thumbprint from my beautiful knife. Oh did i mention one of the reasons i love my S1is that it is SSSHHHAAAAAAAAAARRRPPP.

Mark, just about any high-quality military-style knife will have that effect on non-knife people.

Those kinds of knives have a powerful effect on most folks. In many cases, it's their first hands-on experience with the deadly-serious tools professionals use to safeguard our freedoms. Like someone once said, and I forget who, "It's a thing of beauty, despite its purpose."

I didn't realize how little it takes to get that reaction from most people until someone went into hysterics because I was using a Tomcat 1 (gasp!) at the time.

To his credit, your in-law got over the "what do you need that for" phase pretty quickly. Many people, I'm sorry to say, get stuck there and stay there.

p.s. I've not been able to get mine that sharp.......

Mine has still got it's factory edge, i was very surprised when i bought it how sharp it was.To be honest with you i've never really used it apart from decapitating some flowers in the garden.....SWISH.....but at least i now know it's a flesh eater.
Two reasons why i haven't really used it. (1) I really don't want to scratch the blade, but i'm gonna bite the bullet on that one and use it as soon as i get number 2 sorted. (2) I'm not a big fan of the sheath, don't like the way it carries on my belt. So i'm going to either find one or make one some time soon.Love the knife not keen on the sheath.....thanks.

English,

mine's been through the wringer and then some..... Done most everything except chop granite (I do that with my Tigershark....). The handle long ago lost the varnish, and the blade long ago lost the bluing. What a great knife, it's always the first one I grab when heading into the field.

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. you don't want the sheath, please feel free to send it to me, I know just how to keep it useful with another knife I have that needs a sheath.

Hunter, good to know you're using it and it can take it. If i ever decide what i'm gonna do i'll remember you've got dibs on the sheath.
