I got my first one when I was about 13 at a gunshow. The knife was worn a bit at that point. The year was 1994. Anyway over the years working on my grandfathers farm I beat the heck out of that knife, cutting wood, rope, twine, hacking various wild saplings, and things down. It has been exposed to all types of climates, from snow and ice to dry and hot. Also it has been thrown at many a tree both soft and hard woods. To make matters a bit more extreme I cut a 14 inch small truck tire off a rim with it. That is both rubber and steel wiring! Messed the edge up...but I got it back on quick.

I finally got a new Ontario 499 pilots knife a few weeks ago. The sharpening stone takes a lot of heat...but about 20 hits on each side of the blade using both sides of the stone and I got a pretty darn good edge.

I know this knife takes a lot of heat...but from snow, humidity, fertilizer bags, using the butt to beat ammo boxes open, and using the tip to clear jams in my buddies AR-15....I have to say I love this little knife.

Its like my Romanian semi-auto AK. It just keeps ticking no matter what. I put Mink Oil on the handle and sheath....good stuff!

Mine is 32 years old and counting. A fine knife.
