Why I prefer a knife to handgun ?!

Boriqua, this is an issue I struggle with quite a bit, but for a reason other than bystanders. I would love to carry a handgun, but I have a ton of kids and I know they love to explore. Yes, there are the locks, safes, etc; and, yes, if it wasn't on me it would be locked; and, yes, train the kids. But what if...plus my wife is totally against it. (Shotgun, yes. Handgun, no.)

The debate continues: But what if I am in a situation where a handgun would have been the decisive factor?

Over and over, around and around...

I have not settled this debate in my mind.

Ever try to peel an orange, slice a bagel, or open a box with a gun?

Great point James. I was talking solely as a self defense tool but if you are going inconvience yourself to some degree by walking around with a hunk of heavy metal its nice if it could serve a daily purpose. More bang for the buck. A hand gun is pretty damn heavy especially when compared to my daily carry knife. But I get to use my knife on an absolute daily basis. Yesterday it had the deadly duty of cutting open three boxes, a bag of soil an orange and a mango. Gun would have made an awful mess of the mango

A tool that serves many purposes. Defense being just one of them.

Simple. Carry both. And no, I'm not being a smart***. You carry what you think you may need, and use what the situation dictates. Not that it is always comfortable, or in some cases/places even possible to carry both, but you do what you can.

My choice is knife for utility and firearm for defense. I'm no Seal, I'm not going to be taking some dude down with my Ramboblade 2000, but I can and will pull a trigger. Deployment issues are similar for both, depending on your hardware. If it goes beyond exchanging knuckles, then it's stopping power I look for.

And liability is always an issue, but survival is key.

A knife has so many uses a gun only one(although I suppose you could hammer nails with one if you were desperate).

If more people were "allowed" to carry guns, less people would have to. ((Check it out: http://www.nra.org/)) The question is all but moot in an area like the northeast, where concealed carry is, practically speaking, legally impossible.

And yet, an otherwise inoffensive pocketknife can do enough damage to qualify as a reasonable weapon under ordinary circumstances. You just have to be ready to make an ugly face, an uglier noise, and -- slash!

Personally, I prefer a bludgeon. A rattan crooktop cane is nice. As a technical cripple, I can carry one anywhere I please.

For what purpose? If we're talking self-defense, well, I really like knives, have umpteen of'em, collected them for several years, but when the rubber meets the road, I'd reach for my .45 every time. As the man said about his wife, "she may be ugly, but she's permanent."

I suppose you have to carry whats comfortable, and what your daily situation dictates. I carry both, just for the fact that I live in an area where gang bangers with no regard for anyone seem to be running rampant, and the drug trade is quite high. My kids know I carry both, and we have had discussions about them, and they know the gun safe is off limits, and they are NEVER to touch it unless I'm there with them.I also never leave either knife or gun out where they can get to them. I usually only carry the knife in situations where the gun is not practical, and to date, I have never had to even come close to using them, thank god. BUT, I'm ready if the situation ever arises.
