Why I probably won't buy another Randall...

...And my problem with the collector mentality in general.
Years ago I purchased a standard Randall model #5 from direct from the company.
It served me as wonderful tool
over the years performing every task imaginable in the
great outdoors.
While hunting a couple of weeks ago the knife was
lost. I planned to replace the knife with one just
like it. I went to the website only to learn that the
wait would be close to 4yrs! I might need a new knife
before 2009!
Best I can tell the company seems to have shifted
it's focus to placating collectors. They make a good
product and it disheartens me to think that so many of
these fine tools are being locked away in safes, under
glass, or traded and sold like baseball cards rather
than being used for the purposes they were designed.
As evidence I submit that most of what I could find
for sale on the aftermarket were mint condition(never
carried, sharpened, or placed in sheath etc...) with
options that those of us who use knives as the tools
they are would never consider such as hard-to-sharpen
stainless blades, and pink and purple handle materials
that look like they belong on a Tiffany lamp.
I did find a website "Nordicknives.com" which offers
user grade Randalls in about a year but only at an
exorbant mark-up. I refuse to pay $335 for a $265
knife.
Knives are tools, not trophies. I realize that it is
not up to the maker to decide what their customers do with
the products. I also realize that a 4yr wait means
good business and I offer congratulations on their
sucess, and if I knew that every knife you sold was
used for its intended purpose I would have no
complaints. But I would like to see the company
reduce the number of collector type options and
concentrate on making knives more likely to be used.
If for no other reason to ensure that more usable,
affordable knives are in circulation for users like
me.
I really think that these knives are an oasis in a desert of factory made junk and cheap materials but I strongly disagree with the idea that a knife is more valuable as a horded display item than in the hands of someone who uses it while they're out enjoying life.
Just for the record I don't man any offense to anyone here, I just felt that this would be the best forum voice my opinion.

Get yourself a custom by one of the makers out there.Carbon steel.Keep those Randalls for us collectors. ;)

I can hardly blame Radall for following the money, but I agree it's kind of like breeding "show quality" beagles that won't chase rabbits...

Perhaps this opens a market gap for other innovators to fill.

Badzilla83, I don't think Randall is to blame for the fact that their products are in demand -- other than they have refused to grow to the size of some of the mass produced knife companies. ...and what evidence is there that they only cater to collectors? I recently received a knife I ordered from one of their dealers. It took about two years from order to receipt, at the current factory price. It is not a knife made with high end furniture, just plain old green micarta. If you ask Randall I bet their response is they do things the way they've always done them, it's just that more people know about them now (probably a fault of the internet) and more people want their products.

I think you can find a dealer who will get you a knife at dealer price in less than four years.

Just noticed you posted an identical thread over on the General forum. Why did you post one in both places? If I'd seen the other, long one first, I wouldn't have posted here! ...even if this is the proper place to post a Randall related topic.

The only thing Randall Made Knives is guilty of is staying small, a quality that I truly admire. I feel your pain though. The aftermarket markup on some available Randalls now due to the wait-time from the factory is silly. Here are two places where it's not so bad. I'd email them both to hold a #5 for you when they come across one.

Don't give up on RMK. They make a darn nice using knife, as you well know! Good luck to you!

Professor.

Have you ever considered a custom De Leon? Strong, well ground, well made knives that'll remind you of a user RMK at half the price and a three - four month wait. Most of his knives are ATS-34 but he'll also make you one out of 1095. Large choice of handles and I think his stag is better looking than many coming out of the RMK shop now days. But don't expect to get a Randall quality sheath from De Leon.

I want to get one, but I too am a little put off by the wait time, and their prices lol. I have seen lots of Randall knives on eBay, if you want to pay through the nose for one, that would be a good bet to check out.

I have no personal experience with them, but Martin Knives out of Texas claims that it only takes a month or two for them to make up a custom knife, and they have several models that are very similar to Randall's for around the same price, especially their survival model and survival/dive models. Their prices seem reasonable too.
