Why INFI? What does it mean?

Why is Jerry's miracle metal called INFI? Do the letters stand for something? Did he just pound a dust-crusted fist down on the keyboard and come up with it? Was there a contest to name it with a free knife as the prize?

Does anyone know the source of the name of that which drives so many to obsessive behavior?

Anyone?

:confused:

{INFI, INFI, INFI, INFI.... Let the chants begin...}
Oh, hi, Brian!
i resemble those remarks!
Looks like the guys already posted the links i was thinking of;
My favorite - today anyway - is:
Intermolecular Nitride, Finely Intermingled
Since INFI has as its dynamic ingredient: Nitrogen, in the form of Nitrides, for hardness, toughness, wear resistance, & a special bonding that occurs between the other elements as INFI is formed, making their unique properties enhanced at optimum performance...
the cryogenic heat treat at over 68 hours getting to -312^ F has something to do with it, too! :D i do not know of ANY other knife-maker that performs this kind of stringent treating upon each blade they make & sell; others may use some form of cryo~ but it isn't for as long, nor as gradual of a "pull-down" time
(10 hours to GET to -312; then 48 hours DURING that temp~; then 10 hours back OUT from that temp; Whew!) Now THAT IS CHILLIN' MAN....! Takes the stress risers right outta there...
it be "Cool Steel" :cool: Chillin' cool.
Ain't no wannabe Camillus-knife resell company here, outta Ventura, with that similiar namesake... Nosirree B...
i have here on my desk a wonderful Neil Blackwood custom knife, made in CPM S30V "SuperSteel" Neil cryo'd it overnight, then triple tempered; i trust it to do many things other knives won't do: but it still ain't INFI-cryo'd!!! i wouldn't pry with it like i would my all-INFI Satin Jack. :D

So: INFI?
i got my guesses....
{INFI, there's just something about that name;
just something abut that elemental combo;
just something about that treatment...}
nothin' else like it.

I asked Jerry this question last night. He managed to completely avoid the subject. Instead he wanted to ask my opinion on some of the folder designs.

:D

(It's still April 1st isn't it?)

Here we go again!:eek:

INFI stands for a tough steel that is remarkably stain resistant, for not being stainless, flexible yet strong and have metalurgy and molecular composition such that an edge will not be prone to chipping, a blade will not be prone to breaking and an owner will not be prone to stopping at just one. These things I know for a fact. Now, if you were to ask me what I-N-F-I is an acronym for, I would have to tell you that I haven't a clue and would defer to Climber on matter of this sort.:rolleyes:

Jerry could borrow from the drug dealers marketing plan, "Hey, the first time is free..." because once you own a Busse, you just keep buying and buying.

Hope I sufficiently muddied the waters.:D

I was wondering the same thing as Brian as what INFI stands for.
Now if my deficiency-INFI friends ask, I at least can explain its meaning.
Great info, Climber. Thanks.

Oge14 - either upload them to youtube or photobucket or some host and post the links :-). I already know, but I would like to see your videos.

Nice thread--nine years old and still interesting.

I'd forgotten the hour count on the cryo--very impressive. I miss seeing Climber's posts--haven't seen him around in a couple of years.

I thought I read somewhere that is stood for " infinity steel" ...but I could be wrong..
