why is G-10 so popular?

I don't see that there is any attraction among the people I deal with...I have about 50 knives here at my desk, and not a G-10 among them...I consider myself average...

There has been little or no talk of G-10 in this Forum...

What would prompt you to think it is a big deal anywhere??? What magazine is pushing it???

I have nothing against G-10...but if I'm going to rescale a Buck, I'll do it in Micarta or wood or even stag...G-10 deosn't even enter my mind...in fact, it's leaving now...phfft...gone...

Yep, it's a boring Friday night... :D

the reason i ask is, i purchased 2 bucks that were on sale at the Buck website; the 880 and the 882. i like both knives but notice that the one with g-10 is pricier and i see that's the case every where i go. any damn blade (even 440a) with G-10 is abnormally expensive. i personally prefer the glass re-enforced handle on my police model ( it is lighter) but that's just my opinion.:)

any one else that might know?

 ...I'm afraid I'm right there with Trax on this one. Be it G-10 or 12 or even 22...I'll stick with the wood, bone or anything else natural and of course micarta...Guess I'm not too imaginative...but I've also been made aware that G-10 and micarta are just about, almost, nearly the same...LOL...also just gotta add that I don't know the first thing about G-10 as I've never seen or held it..

ive got a matched pair of kershaw linerlock folders with the g-10 and on them it fits and works perfect i prefer the more exotic woods or horn or bone but sure wouldnt shy away from a knife just because it had g10 scales and on some smaller knives i would prefer the g10 to the standard common wood or plastic

I'm one of the ones that loves G10. My 1st "real" knife was one of the early AFCK's (w/ the spydie hole), so I didn't know any different until I picked up some other knives.

FRN, glass reinforced nylon, zytel, tacom--they all feel like cheap, thin plastic to me compared to G10.

Don't know why I like it so much, I just do. As a matter of fact, the lack of G10 is the only reason I won't take that incredible deal on the $40 Police knives that Buck has going on right now.

G-10's good stuff. Maybe not as pretty as wood or bone, but tough as nails and light.

I EDC a Benchmade 710. That knife has been through hell and back and the G-10 has held up just fine. It's taken some eight to ten foot falls from a ladder with no ill effects.

For all it's modern materials, the 710 is still a classy, good looking knife... not as pretty as a Buck 110 though, but a lot lighter.

As I know so little about G-10 I had to do some looking around for a bit of information on it...I came up with these comments on a comparison of G-10 with micarta...

I found it interesting as well...although I don't windsurf...

Where'd that "code" thing come from??? Spark buy a new version of Forum software??? :p

In the industry that I work in they've been using G10 for many years as a printed circuit board substrate. Mostly the FR4 version which is more flame retardant.
Here's a link to a quick description......basically fiber glass impregnated with epoxy like boat hulls and surfboards. Pretty tough stuff but naturally as it wears it does expose glass fiber.

...Hmmm...Not sure I like this software as much as I did the old stuff Trax...Seems I may have to look into G-10 for scale material. Seems the price of micarta may be the determining factor for me though...(another hmmm...seems I'm still on the "old" software huh? )...;)

They are more exspensive, but your looking at the sale prices on the Buck site which makes the difference seems more so. I notice on case knives, the G-10 handles are the same price as the bone handles.

The list price of an 882BKX with ATS-34 steel and a plastic re-enforced handle on the Buck site is $153. The the 882SBTG with a G-10 handle and 154CM steel on the buck site is $186. The 882BKX just happens to be on a great sale price of $40.

If you look at the street price of a 882 with or without a G-10 handle on this site:
http://www.soonerstateknives.com/bucktacticalknives.htm

you will notice that the price difference is $10, ($97 vs. $107). More expensive yes, but overly so.
