Why is it called an XM-18?

This is a stupid, unimportant question, but curious. I was showing my wife my XM-18 and a picture of an XM-24 and she asked why they were named '18' and '24'? Obviously hte 24 is bigger, but is it 6mm bigger? What is the XM or the 18 from?

Yes, this is very, very unimportant, but once she asked I can't stop wondering. :)

I believe the XM is an abbreviation for "Experimental Model", and 18 was the unit number for Ricks firefighting unit.

Something like that.
