Why is it so hard to find a decent Sgain Dubh at a reasonable price?

The only Sgain Dubhs I can locate are either $20 Asian mystery steel, or $200+ customs, now that Cold Steel has quit making them. I can't even find a decent $30-40 blade blank. Am I overlooking something?

Ok, well lot of makers on here that I would bet could turn you out a nice one for well under 200 bucks. I've had a couple of knives from museum replicas and they were well made.

Looks like sheffield makes a few versions, I remember seeing one made by Big Chris that was very nice too.

If you have a museum replica made what else are you looking for? I bought the Cold Steel dirk. I haven't seen anything close to rival it at a Scottish event. I am very much in the field of period combat quality, however before standardized quality control there's no way to expect higher quality steel before now.
Museum replicas of any kind are better than period.

Museum replicas is a company here in GA that sells "Windlass Steelcraft's" products (made in India). I don't think cold steel sells their SD any more.

You could always make one yourself.

It's what I've been doing for knives that I'd like but cannot afford.

Had the exact same issue a few months ago so...I made my own! That's about the easiest way to get a good quality one without breaking the bank. If you cant buy it, make it.

I'm thinking that a Green River knife like this could be cut down into a Sgian Dubh:

I bought one in Edinburgh in 2001.... paid about 100 pounds
Made by Art Pewter model SD/DS

It is marked:
Stainless Steel
Art Pewter Silver
Glasgow Scotland

Upon googling, the type of stainless remains unknown.....

It is not sharp, but does have edge bevels.... I think it would easily be sharpened if I chose to.

Check out lochnessorigins.com
they have several blade blanks, and also kits, in various steels... some of them pretty nice too, and in the price range you mentioned :)
420, 12c27m, D2, Damascus, RWL34

Dangit, now I want to make one......
