Why is my leather wrinkling like this? I made several of these little notebooks from cheap Tandy 8/10 oz and they didn't wrinkle. This is 6/7 oz Zach White American shoulder. The one on the left is cased so it will bend and stay bent, dyed, and oiled. The one on the right is only oiled and I bent it a couple times to check that I cut it correctly. Why is my leather wrinkling like that? It looks like crap.

It is wrinkling because it has stretched in the fold. It is a very common occurrence when leather is folded or creased rapidly and forced onto the sharp fold. It is very hard to control on folds going past 90 degrees. It is always a good idea to dampen the leather prior to starting the folds. This allow for a less stressed stretch for the fold.

Probably not. Damp should have been sufficient. (I answered your other email.)

Its quite a bit more expensive but I made my card wallet like that using cordovan and they don't crease so that's one way of working around that issue. :)

Cordovan is a wonderful leather to use. The only thing that is holding me back from using it more often is the price tag!

The photo below is my whiskey tan wallet after about a year of continuous use. The hinge has no crease because its a membrane rather than skin:
