Why is my new Busse blade so dull?

Hello all! First off, this is my first post! I enjoy this group emensely, and am hoping you can help me. I bought a Basic 5, new in the box from a dealer online. I took it to my parents farm this weekend, and man is the blade on this thing dull dull dull. I was embarressed as my brother is cutting and chopping with his cold steel and I'm having a hard time chopping through hay bail string (feeding the cows)! Do the knives come this dull from the factory, that couldn't be.

I want to sharpen it, but don't want to mess up the blade. I have a "diamond sharpener" from spiderco, ie: the rods. Any pointers?

Thanks!

They shouldn't, but it happens from time to time to all production manufacturers, and even the customs. It is rare to see someone (sane) claim to have a 100% perfect initial sharpness. With obvious exceptions like R.J. Martin who puts a lot of effort into sharpening every single knife and has very high standards.

[sharpening]

Any pointers?

First off don't get hung up on "sharpening a busse". It is basically a knife and can be sharpened just as any other knife can with various subtle differences which optomize the performance in various ways, but don't too badly effect the end goal or method. Lots of past posts have discussed this in detail, a search would be worthwhile.

I have a Lean Mean Sreet Variant and it came with a relatively dull edge. I'm wondering if that doesn't help for chopping. I tried it on a sharpmaker but that infi is hard stuff. But for this baby sharpness isn't an issue because it stays in my knife drawer. It is only one of two made. Jerry has the other one!:D  :p

No, it is less efficient, less durable and more dangerous.

Very true.
Cliff, I am impressed: that is the shortest post I have ever seen you make...;) :D

Wilco, It shouldn't be dull. We haven't made those for quite some time. Please send it in and it will be sharpened until it screams.

Sorry for any inconvenience,

Jerry

Jerry: Mine came so sharp I screamed! From your description, I must have got one of your more recent knives! ;)

Rob: I would be so lucky to have Cliff write so short a response to one of my posts! :)

For me, the inconvenience was in waiting for my wife to stop laughing after I cut the back of my hand with a basic 9 while test shaving hair on my forearm:rolleyes:  :o

Funny, all the ones I've received from the factory
have scared the hair off my arm! :D

Same here. Every one has shaved right out of the box. Wilco, from what online company did you buy a brand new Basic 5?

Wilco, what have you decided to do?

I hope this wasn't one of "those" posts....

Mike

I think I will send it in to Jerry. I hope my original post did not emply I was mad, down on the knife, etc. I love my Busse's! They are the best fixed knife in the business, period, imho. (now I need a Busse folder - hint hint) In fact, I'm going to buy another Busse in the next couple of days....Jerry, no problem, like I said the only bad thing is I got some good natured ribbing from my brother! (yeah, wait til he sees the public defender I'm gonna buy!:D )
