why is the rat 5 20 dollars more then the rat 6? im thinking about buying the rat survival kit that includes the rat 6. is it worth it? would it be better to get the rat 4 then make my own kit?

sorry im having a hard time deciding which rat knife i want. i dont do much outdoors stuff right now but im trying to get into it. so the rat 4 would probably be enough for what i do i guess. i just like to be prepared. dont even know why i brought up the rat 5. ive just really good reviews on it.

The RC-5 is a serious piece of steel. I'm not saying that the RC-6 isn't bada$$, but the 5 is thicker and has more features than the 6. Plus it comes with a stellar sheath!

As an all around knife to go outdoors with I would think that the 4 is a great choice!

Heck, buy them all, you won't be able to stop with just 1 RAT anyways, I promise you that, heh. ;):D

The RC-4 is a really good choice for a general purpose knife. The RC-5 is specialized for more hazardous situations.

I think you should study what goes into a good kit and make your own.

If you don't already have the stuff in the RAT "Comprehensive Kit", then I say go for it, it's a good deal. Even shopping around, it'd be hard to put together a kit with that same stuff for that price.

The RC5 costs more than the 6, because it uses more steel, has a more expensive sheath, and the additional manufacturing step of putting in the bow drill divot into the handle. I'm surprised it's not a larger price difference.

That being said, the RC6 is a better slicer with a full flat grind, rather than a sabre grind, is a little longer, and IMO the more useful knife -- unless you are ejecting from an aircraft in a war zone, in which case the RC5 would probably be the better choice.

The question of the RC-5 & RC-6 price differences has already been addressed so I'll just make another recommendation for the RC-4 for your first RAT Cutlery knife. The RC-4 size is large enough to do some serious cutting but small enough to handle well for lighter tasks. It makes a great "general purpose" outdoor knife whether it be batoning campfire wood, cutting shelter materials or field dressing a deer.

I wish you the best in making your decision.

In my opinion, I would get the RC 4. It is the best first knife from RAT. However, you will not be satisfied with only one.

Here is what you do...

Get the Kit w/ RC6 ... take the stuff and use it, write a review, and post Pictures. :D

Then.. you will order the RC4 and then RC5.. and then RC3... and Izula... so on.. so on.. and so on...

Random

Also, if you have big hands, the handle on the RC4 didn't quite work for me. Too much blade for that little handle, IMO. That size handle works great on a blade the size of the RC3, however. And the RC3 and RC6 make a great pair. So. . .get the kit with the 6, and buy an RC3 to go with it, and you're all set with a great setup!

RC-4 would be my first choice.

RC-5 second.

RC-6 third.

Oh, and buy an RC-3 and an Izula in between.

Then wait for the HEST and the RTAKIII to come out.

Then bite your nails for the folder.

I'm so jelous of people who are just getting into RAT, they have so much to choose from.

+1 for buying the kit if you don't have the stuff. The price is really right on it.

+1 also for the RC4. If you don't buy the kit, the RC4 is my favorite in the line. It is balanced well, good sized and will take anything you throw at it.

I would either go RC-6 & Izula (great combo) or just get an RC-4 (great "do it all" knife).

Regardless, you will be more than happy with whatever purchase you make. RAT Cutlery is awesome :)

I would got for the RC-6 or 5 for a first knife. I don't even have large hands, but the handle was a little uncomfortable compared to the RC-6 and 5. I had the 6 in a passaround, and have the 5 now, and I was amazed at how good the handle felt.
