Why is search down?

I know it's annoying to hear repetitive questions but what choice do I have if search is only for paying customers. Fubar
 
You can use google to search bladeforums. Or shell out 10 measley dollars for a basic membership.

Have you tried using google Advanced Search? :)

If not - click on "Advanced search" (on the google home page), and on the "advanced search" page type
"www.bladeforums.com" in the space labeled "Search within a site or domain".
(At the bottom of the Advanced search page.)

i think the search is down for non-paying members because otherwise it will cause the server to stuff up with a ton of people using the search function! :)
 
It just gets to me cause I've been away for awhile and came back to see that I can't access all the good advice I received in the past.

"10 measley dollars"...First of all I only come on here when I need help from fellow bladesmiths on certain projects and would you pay $10 just to get advice someone freely gave to you as a gesture of KINDNESS. Isn't part of these forums about helping people and spreading the wonders of knife making. And charging someone 10 bucks so the search engine won't get clogged up doesn't fly with me. What are they gonna do when everyone does? raise the price to 20? Get real. I'd understand more if they charged new members.

There are PLENTY of knife forums out there. I enjoyed my time here but I'm out.:jerkit:
 
Just in case Playmaker isn't gone forever, -- I moved this from Shoptalk to Service and Support which is the proper forum for questions about how Bladeforums works and why.

You can search using Google by posting your search terms followed by site:Bladeforums.com which gives better results than the Bladeforums search software itself.

You can come here and freeload off your fellow knifemakers by asking questions that it only takes them a moment to answer, and is available to other readers, too. That's great.

Are you aware it costs real money to run a website this busy? Lots of it. For all the membership fees, Spark still has to pay out of his own funds to provide this playground for us. Whining that everything isn't free is childish. Thanking us for providing Bladeforums with a jerk-it smiley is even more childish.

No, I'm not particularly concerned with your feelings at this point.
 
I believe this site may be better off without folks who say they seldom visit and then flame it.

Are you calling asking and receiving info freeloading? That just reflects what kind of person you are, to offer help and call them freeloaders who accepts. If that was the case don't reply and shut down these forums to the public. Your logic is flawed. Now what's really cheap is to gather a good following of members that's already settled on these forums then one day flip on them and say 'eh now we're gonna charge you money to get the same services you were getting before'. And if the cost to run these forums was an issue in the first place you should've charged from the beginning or to new members only when the cost got too high. How would you feel to have correspondences you had with others taken away and then offered back to you for a small fee. It's the principal of it my friend. Come on guys...deep down you know I'm right. Hey, whatever you gotta do to get paid.;)

concerning the :jerkit:...this is YOUR site. Don't call me childish for using it. It's like haveing a porn collection and calling me a perv for popping in a tape. Get real.
 
NO, you are NOT right!! If you don't like the rules, go play somewhere else! You have no idea what it costs Spark TO run this place!! If it is too difficult to use Google search, oh well. deal with it. If you like this site, then pony up and help support it!! If you are gonna keep complaining because you can't search, there is the door. I am SO sick of all this whining about NOT being able to search!! This is Spark's house, his rules. It is what it is!

Spark supports Bladeforums at his own expense. He appreciates others VOLUNTARILY contributing a few bucks a year to help offset the cost. To show his appreciation, he gives them a few services others don't get.

But showing up to read and reply is free to everyone. Searching is free too, but not on Bladforums' server -- it increases the load by enough that it's been partially disabled. So what? You can still use Google. I even showed you how: type in your search terms followed by site:Bladeforums. Is that too complicated for you?

You're a freeloader because you come in here twice a month on the average, by your own admission to get free information from generous knifemakers. What you don't do is show up when you don't need something, to share your stories, to give others help, to join the ongoing discussions here. You take, take, take, and want it all for free. You give nothing, not being as generous as those who help you.

Nothing is free. What you don't pay for, someone else does. All these generous guys titled KnifeMaker pay a bit more than the Basic membership. You insult them with your attitude.

Not everyone buys a higher level membership and we can understand that. We have members with families and members who are out of work. We have a lot of schoolkids onboard. They may not have a lot of personal disposable income for membership fees right now. They contribute their enthusiasm, their questions, their growing understanding, their willingness to be part of a community.

You contribute selfish whining. THAT'S freeloading.
 
Playmaker, your attitude sucks. If you don't think it's worth ten dollars to get the search function, then live without the search function, or go spend your time on those other knife forums.
 
Hmm.. Lets see. For $10 I get about 1.5 gallons of gas, which is not even enough fuel to get me down to Thunder Bay one way to do a supply run.

But for $10 would get a person a chance to communicate and search more easilly with people and members here from all over the planet.

So whats the big deal here, I wonder what he says when its time to fill up the tank?
 
I'm terribly sorry that I can't continue to provide services for free for you, and choose to reward people that help support this site with additional features.

I'm not forcing you to shell out cash. You can access any of the public forums for free. You can use the google search as well. If you want some premium services though, we ask you to help us stay open.
 
Are people incapable of reading the announcements?

Add this link to your bookmarks or toolbar. Works better than BF's search for most things, and doesn't strain the server.
