I've wondered about this for a couple of years. I can understand some important dates.

Is it worth not missing out on buying a CRK for a good price on the fs exchange because you Have to have a certain date....................

A member had a large plain jane classic fs today with a couple of issues that could have easily been taken care of with a spa treatment. He was asking $280.

The knife also came with an extra scale. A member wanted to know the BD so he missed out on a great knife at a Great price. The seller didn't know

the bd. Someone else bought it for a great price IMO.

The knife came with the box and the bd card. I would have bought it myself, but I already have large classic that I bought nib. I using/carrying mine

sometimes.

I would say that for some it's a tipping point for their decision. Like you I hardly need any more CRK's; however, if I saw one with my birthday on it....BAM. Otherwise I usually let others have their fun.

Unless it's something really cool of course :D

This.

I check the exchange for CRKs looking only for specific dates at this point in my collecting. At this point there are only a few knives that I would buy, and it would be based on the birthdate.
As for the card itself, I want that to help verify that it is an actual CRK.

I think it's really nothing more than a case of people looking for a special date for one reason or another, it could be their kids birthday, wedding day or death of a loved one they want to remember and honor in some way. I don't think it's right to say they are "missing out", they are just fine tuning a puchase for a specific reason. :)

I'd add that a lot of guys put value on the whole package. Many buyers want everything the knife came with. It's not missing out on something. I'd say it's passing on something less than you want.

What Haze Said ^^^.......!!!

Even though it's a good deal/price, it's still a lot of money for some folks to let go of. Everyone knows about the birthday dates of CRK's and getting that special one at a great price is part of the hunt for some.

Very recently, I saw someone selling a small Insingo 21 with my birthday (my 24th birthday anyway). I passed on the knife because I wanted a micarta Insingo at the time, and have thought about it nearly every day since. Should've bought it...

Everyone has their own criteria for a buying decision, that's what makes the world go round!

I bought a brand new 25, three days later I saw a 25 on the exchange with a born on date of my 30th birthday. I debated for an hour and bought it and sold the other 25. I just couldnt pass that up.

I bought this knife randomly at an online knife store and it happened to have a birthdate of my 40th birthday. It is never leaving my hands until my son will appreciate it.

I couldn't agree with Haze more.

I never cared about the birthday of the knife but if it happened to land on a day that was special for another reason that would've been kind of neat.

Then after losing my Father to cancer last year I was offered a trade for something I had and that trade ( a large 21 ) just happened to land on what would've been my Dad's birthday that year. Normally I would've held out for $50 more for me in the trade but after noticing the birthday I accepted the trade and carry that knife almost exclusively now.

Funny thing is that it's a standard 21 blade which was my least favorite( I owned none of them with the standard blade ) but I've learned to love that profile now. Top that off with a perfect detent, early lock up, and the best jimping I've ever felt on a 21 that wasn't Damascus and it's the perfect CRK that also keeps my father on my mind in this very busy life.

I won't be giving anybody a nudge or laugh over wanting a specific birthdate any longer- I get it now.

Great answer and it's the truth.

I bought a Sebenza, and I revived it exactly one year after it was born. That was pretty awesome IMO.

I bought it at New Graham's and didn't know the BD when I ordered it!

I recently purchased an Umnum and the purchase was based solely on its birthdate. I didn't need another knife, and in fact was looking to start downsizing. I just happened to be surfing through the Exchange, checking prices on a few things when there it was, a tanto Umnum with my birthdate *on it. I had to have it, didn't even stop to think. I immediately PMed the seller and now it's sitting in my pocket, and what's more, some anodizing by a friend here (he posted in this thread :D ) made it that much more special. Here's a pic:

*The month and the day, not the year. Not sure there were CRK knives being made that far back and if there were, I almost certainly couldn't afford any such examples surviving today! :D

I've seen one CRK on the exchange that had my birthday and I wasn't interested. To each his own. However, when I bought my last one from the local shop, I looked at the dates of the 3 I handpicked between. None of them were significant, but I doubt I would have sacrificed what I felt was the best knife of the 3 just to have a particular date.

The b-day is an integral part of what makes a Chris Reeve knife special.
It's not just a knife and therefore it matters.
To some more than to others.
