I just discovered this section of the BF and I love buck knives.

Anyway as the title says, why do they call the 283 a Nano bantam ?

They look nothing like a bantam, and in fact look 10x better ( I think the bantam is ugly, but that's just me ) BTW I absolutely love my buck 283 and the awesome grip and ergos that you get for such a small knife.
It's not like they called the 425 a nano bucklite, they named it the minibuck .
So why didn't they just call it something else, they could've named it the microlite or something so why didn't they.

heh, never noticed so I searched for some pics. Yep, you're right. Different blades and all.
I see new black blades and Kryptec scales which are kind of interesting.

Same grind, finish and drop point on the blade. Lock-back. Same linerless, riveted, FRN slabs and assembly.

The shape of the handle was changed to keep it ergonomic. If they put together a true miniature version of the 285/286, the finger grooves would be too small as would the lock bar and the notch it is pressed into to unlock it.

Much like the Gerber LST, the Magnum and Magnum JR. Had different shaped handles but were still LST's.

But the bucklite Max has all of the exact same features.
I know that they couldn't scale it down perfectly, but they could've at least made it resemble a bantam if they were gonna drag it down by calling it one. There are some design elements that they could've added ( other than the color schemes )

When you think about it the 283 fits more into the bucklite Max series than it does the bantam.

It even has an eyeleted lanyard hole like my 482 ( or all of the bucklite Max's )

They should've just named it the Nano-lite.

All I'm really saying is why are they calling it something that it's not.

I get where you're coming from but I guess I don't see it the same. I have four user 285's and think they're a great knife. I don't think the Bantam name drags it down at all. It's a very underrated line and a knife that is tougher than it looks on paper.

If they changed the name of the 285's to the "Lady Buck" or re-marketed it as a modern day Girl Scout knife, it's still a good knife, and I'd still use 'em.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, "A rose by any other name...";)

It's definitely a great knife, but I'm just annoyed by the fact that they misnamed it.
I know that the US made bantam's are great knives but I just can't get past the looks ,especially since my 482 is basically the same thing but better looking and feeling.

This certainly doesn't keep me from loving the knife ( in fact it's a better knife than my 425 )
But it does cross my mind every time I use it.

Because a bunch of guys in expensive shiny suits with very thin watches 'conceptualised' the 'cross-brandised thematic' on a bunch of flip-charts for maximum 'customer recognition'....Then applauded each other's egos and went for soy-half-caff-flat-whites and $50 quinoa salad. ;)

Seriously- you are trying to apply logic to a fundamentally illogical process....Why is the Prius called the Prius? :D

Hay now. Maybe the OP just wanted to know if there was a legitimate reason behind the name. What it boils down to is that it is just a name they picked that they liked. Most likely no other reason.

There doesn't have to be a reason for a products name, but when there's a perfectly logical reason not to use a certain name ( ie naming it after an existing product that it looks nothing like ) then I think they shouldn't use it.

First thing I think of when I see a 283 is, "That's a small Bantam."

Now for a better question. Why won't Buck add a barehead and a full flat grind option in the custom shop?

I know, I know... I changed the subject. Deeper point is that you'll go nuts trying to figure Buck out.

... you'll go nuts trying to figure Buck out.

isn't it more like "You'll go nuts trying to figure _______ (fill in blank) out"?

I gave up trying to figure out women, polly-ticks, hunting and fishing regulations, why you CAN ride your bicycle on SOME Interstate Highways (using the shoulder, of course) and not ALL Interstate Highways, why some think forcing businesses to raise wages "helps" the economy and the working poor (it causes prices to go up by a larger percentage than the forced wage increase), how some "special in the smarts" (special kind of stupid people) think banning guns and knives will lower the crime rate ...
