Why is the Police only offered in stainless steel grip?

With the popularity of the Police model and the apparent lack of love for SS handled knives, it seems like a no brainer that Spyderco would offer this model in a more popular grip. G-10 SPRINGS to mind! I know that they did it before but I really feel that if they introduced the Police in G-10 again, it would sell better than the SS version.

I have a friend who is a cop. I remember he used to carry a SS Police but the last time I saw him, he carried a Delica in FRN. I asked him why and he told me that the SS was too slick when his hands were wet. He almost cut himself badly and he retired it for a Delica! He needs a G-10 Police and so do I. There are at least two sale for sure.

Sal if you do a sprint run, I will shut up about the G-10 Police.;)

Please bear in mind that I don't know this for sure; but my guess would be that a G-10 Police cuts into the niches of other models like the Military or the Endura. A sprint run is possible, but there is not much a G-10 Police would have that an FRN Endura 4 wouldn't. Unliess your heart is set on G-10, then that seems like the best option.

The popularity of the Police model might be the fact that it’s SS. I know that I wouldn’t buy one in G-10 unless they changed the blade steel to H-1… but then I would have it modified to titanium handles. I also know when I first came across a Spyderco that if it had been G-10 I wouldn’t have bought it and probably never would have gotten hooked on Spyderco’s. I also think that the majority of forumites don’t represent the general public so even though most people at the forums don’t like SS handles they probably don’t represent the bulk of the sales. I think if Spyderco thought it would sell better than the SS Police they would probably do it and I’m not against it as long as they also keep offering the SS version.

I modded my SS Police to add more grip even though I’ve never had it slip before but now it has just as secure a grip as G-10 even when its wet. Plus it is still very thin which I find a plus b/c it goes unnoticed in my pocket until I need it unlike some of the thicker G-10 models.

Well, it's already been done. I don't remember when, but it was a few years ago, there were G-10 Police models. Look around.

I'd LOOOOVEEE for them to be back in production too, but I tend to agree with USSR's response above.

Stainless steel handles sell well. the g-10 police didn't sell well so it was disco'd. Buy two on e-bay and give one to your LEO friend. problem solved.

The flat (never seen, but heard they made a hollow) ground G-10 Police is the best Police model I have seen! Never had a titanium, though.

Lol, they made a run or two of CF also, but a new sprint of Peel Ply CF certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings.

If your interested in buying a carbon fiber Police model then you're in luck. I just seen a few at Country Knives that are in stock.

I just checked them and they are sold out. I have seen a few online places claim to have these but as far as I know, they are all gone. Most are outdated and just haven't pulled the ad. I have called on a few and they all say they are discontinued and sold out. I wonder if there is any place that still sells them?

Anyway, thanks for the heads up and I will keep on looking. I really want a user.

Black Ninja,
I have one of these as well. It is the early model that is different than the flat ground blade. It has Gin-1 steel and is swedged like the current Police. It has no liners and the G-10 looks different than the G-10 on the flat ground models. I don't like it as much as the flat ground ATS-34 blades. Maybe someday it will be worth money but right now, I think it is a model that is sort of misunderstood.

The Police is only offered in SS because the G-10 version sold poorly, which is why it was discontinued. You have to keep in mind that just because something is popular on these forums and among knife knuts does not mean it's popular with the general public(who constitute a much larger portion of sales than we do).

SS handles sell better to non knife people. G-10 models sell better to knife knuts.

The Police is a beautiful knife that I would prefer not to see clothed in any other garment. Its SS handle complements the blade grind and profile so nicely. Suitably unique in it's own way. I also find SS Spydies in general to operate more smoothly. They just feel betta.

The comment about wet hands has merit though. That would appear to be a disadvantage of a smooth and narrow SS handle. That's a good reason to carry the FRN Salt in the other pocket.

The police model has one of the highest ratios of blade length to pivot width in the Spyderco line. I believe it approaches 14 to 1. The stainless frame offers very secure support for the pivot and lock...Take Care...Ed
