why is the XM-18 so hyped up?

First I should say that I have an XM-18, and I think it's fantastic. I also have some high end production knives. I'm wondering why the XM-18 has stood out so much from other customs. It seems like the XM-18 is always grouped in with the Sebenza and SNG in comparison posts, and other custom makers' knives aren't really considered. What exactly is the reason for this? Are Rick Hinderer's knives that much better in terms of quality than regularly available high-quality custom folders? If I look, I can usually find high quality customs like Todd Begg MIGs, Lambert knives, etc., available on dealer websites; why aren't these knives sold out like the XM-18?

I don't know for sure, partly because I have yet to either handle or purchase an XM-18. Trust me, based on photos and owner testimony alone, I would LOVE to have one and would be willing to pay the going rate. It just hasn't happened yet. I think Rick's character and what he's all about have a lot to do with the appeal. The knife seems tough as a tank, has great lines, and top notch materials, but you throw in the maker and it really seals the deal. Check out his website, or read an article about Rick and you just want to buy a knife from the guy. Just my opinion.

The XM-18 is an excellent knife as are the Sebenza, SnG and the like. The balance is perfect and the ergos are great. What makes the XM-18 stand apart is its scarcity.

Chris Reeve and Strider knives have a higher production volume than the XM-18. Supply and demand accounts for the higher street price of the XM-18. The XM-18, SnG and the Sebenza all have a list price about the same plus or minus say $35.

I would also consider the Todd Begg Civilian MIG in this group as well. Lamberts are customs and have the custom cache´ that is often accompanied by a higher price and more dealer shelf time.

personally, i like the sebbies more than the xm-18s. they were just too heavy for edc to me. they are great hard use knives, but i do not have a need to edc something that beefy.

Relative to other customs:

1. The XM18 has an affordable retail price.
2. The XM18 is produced in higher numbers.
3. Mr. Hinderer has a online presence (more so on a different forum) and consequently more fans/followers.

Anytime you have a combination like that you're gonna get a popular maker with a popular product.

I guess that does make sense. I'm kind of new into knives; was there a big custom piece that kind of exploded in popularity like the XM-18 but now is unavailable? I know the Sibert Pocket Rocket is pretty desirable but they're nearly impossible to find. Was this the XM-18 of the past? or were Hinderer's other folders still insanely popular?
