Why is titanium so popular among knifemakers?

Sometimes we see certain knives come with titanium bolsters or knives with titanium handles.

These knives are normally priced higher than normal.

Why is titanium such an exotic material that it commands a higher price than the other ordinary metals.

Even knifemakers like to add a touch of titanium now and then to some of the knives they make.

What are the properties of titanium that make it stand tall among the other metals?

I think the strength to weight ratio is one of its most attractive characteristics to knifemakers.

I have a Seiko titanium watch that has spoiled me for all other watches. It is so light that I forget I have it on, but it is extremely strong.

Titanium can also be anodized a variety of colors. It has a memory so when the liner lock is bent to engage it does so everytime. If you used stainless or a type of steel for the liners they would have to be heat treated. It is also completely corrosion resistant and available in a wide variety of thicknesses.

Its light and strong, it won't rust, can be anodized and it has a 'cool' factor all important in sales.

It just is.

i understand. i almost feal like i bought something less if it is not titanium. all the fancy knives use it. so when my fancy knife purchase is not titanium i feal left out. i need a therapist!
i wanted an umfaan, but i got a "special" bm770 instead. now i can't feal good untill i get the umfaan too! does the knife HAVE to be titanium to be worth it's beans?

thank you,
holdanedge.

Something not mentioned yet is the cost of the titanium itself, and the subsequent machining of titanium. It is very expensive to buy, Ive got a couple sources that are cheaper than elsewhere, but its still pricey stuff. Titanium is also one of the most stubborn materials to work with, it does not want to be cut, drilled, tapped, or ground. It does posses very wonderful characteristics for knives, light weight, strong ( strength/weight ratio ), has a memory, and can be anodized ( these were mentioned above ) -- Charles
