Why isn't S30V or VG-10 found in slip-joint multi-bladed knives?

My father can not be found without a knife, his weapon of choice is multi-bladed slip joint knives (personally I am a Spyderco and Atwood guy). I want to get a S30V or VG-10 multi-blade knife for him, partly to see what he thinks of the newer steels.

Does anyone know where to find one?

VG-10 is a Japanese steel as I understand it and may be harder to find.

You can find ATS-34 in slipjoint knives, from Case and Queen(Schatt&Morgan). Not the newest steel, but good none the less. If your dad likes to do a quick sharpening job, i.e: gets pleasure in honing his knife freehand, then those new steels may not be suitable at all!

What kind of knife does your father carry now?

Is it an old one?

These questions could have very direct bearing on what your dad would like.

Queen also offers D2 models... which is comparable to S30V in edge retention. I have one... good quality, good steel, good price.

VG-10 tends to be found in Japanese made knives, and
the more popular manufacturers of slipjoints (Case, Queen,
Schatt etc.) tend to manufacture in the USA.

As for S30V, I think it just hasn't yet found its way into the
slippie market. As mentioned, premium steels (like D2) are
being used already...

I've seen some makers (not slipjoint makers, mind you) comment about how hard they sometimes find S30V can be to machine and to finish, so for making a multi-blade slipjpoint perhaps the time and effort are not worth the trade off for a steel that may have better edge holding, toughness, etc., than what they're already using. Every maker/factory may have a different take on that of course.

A bit of a treasure hunt.
VG10 as I understand is not released out side of Japan. To use it you need to have your knives manafuctured in Seki.

The only S30V multi blades I recall seeing are customs by Al Warren. He uses ATS & S30v primarily. His prices are pretty reasonable, pay more for the exotic handles of course.

Good luck.

Taking a look at Queen's D2 products.

Anyone seen S30V in a slip joint multi-blade knife?

I haven't seen an S30V slipjoint either, except for customs.

Recommend that you also take a look at Schatt & Morgan's
ATS-34 blades. Queen's D2 though IMO is tremendous value.
(Same manufacturer; both made by Ontario Knives)

Another option, if you're looking simply to get away from the standard
slipjoint 420 stainless is a Queen or Moore Maker with 1095 carbon
steel blades.

I believe Moki makes a one bladed slip in VG10 and some lockbacks.

Not true. I saw one last Fall, but I don't remember alot about it. Pretty sure it was a Browning & it had a locking blade. (think it was framelock) I know for sure it was VG10 because I was surprised to see it & I was talking the salesperson about it. Got the impression he didn't know much about it.

brownings are vg10 and made in japan-
i had a icestorm or somthing -was a real nice piece for the $40

Those Brownings do look like a good deal, but not the 3+ bladed slip joint that I was hopping to find. The search continues...

Since when? S&M is made by Queen.

Ontario and Queen are "sister companies". Both owned by Servotronics Inc. According to Queens website, all of both companies business dealings are conducted from the Ontario office, although all of the Queen knives are made in Titusville.
