Why isn't there a Case Knives subforum here?

If you mean separate from the Traditionals subforum, then it's because those "manufacturer subforums" are paid for and moderated by the manufacturer and apparently Case hasn't set one up.

Case has their own forum on their own site (Case Collectors Club). Need to be a paid member there, to use or view it. They'd likely not be too interested in managing or moderating another forum elsewhere, since they're already running one of their own.

I don't think manufacturers have to pay to have a sub-forum. They do need to submit a request and agree to moderate their forum.
If I'm incorrect I'm sure my partner in crime will call me on it. knarfeng knarfeng

I only heard that elsewhere on the forum, only hearsay. Didn't mean to spread misinformation!

.....ooh, well, then I’d have to tab between this forum and others.....and selfishly, I like ‘em all under this one glorious roof ;)

Right :thumbsup::cool:

There is another aspect to a brand sub-forum: they may become sterile if the manufacturer is moderating and or sponsoring it, objective criticism or analysis might not always be welcome, a clique can emerge and like any single issue/theme thing they can become very tedious & solipsistic.

Better a forum where all brands are welcome and compared (provided they meet the Traditional definition etc.) and many connexions and evaluations can be made.

I learned a new word today!! (Very good point, by the way.)

Thanks, the word is particularly apt for today's world besotted with and driven by social-media:D:eek:

You mean like the "Cold Steel" subforum?
A bad word there about the brand (even when true) and you lose your head.

I was thinking about another now defunct Forum actually:D But it might also hold true on any sub-forum/theme that becomes a one trick pony;)

Thing is, CASE is a revered brand with a long pedigree, it still turns out very likeable and desirable knives and when you get one that suits you it's a lifelong knife. Knife collecting/enthusiasm isn't a binary thing for me, either/or, only this type etc. That can be the potential danger of a one brand sub-forum, everything has a context, nothing exists in isolation.

everything has a context, nothing exists in isolation.
As one who until a very few years ago knew virtually nothing about pocketknives except that I always carried one, I think it’s the context of knife history and design which this forum provides which has made it so fascinating to me and keeps me coming back for more. (Along with a lot of very entertaining people, of course.)

Just wondering....

Gary is correct. It's up to the manufacturer to decide if they want a forum here. Spark does not charge manufacturers. They are expected to staff it.

My opinion is that Obsessed with Edges has put his finger on why Case has not asked.

Back in the early '90s, I got an invitation in the mail to join the Case Collectors Club. I was a subscriber to a couple knife magazines then, and likely ended up on Case's mailing lists out of that connection. On a whim, I signed up as a Life Member, as it wasn't too expensive at that time. If given the same invitation today, I'd probably not sign up. This isn't to say they don't have something good going on there, both for Case and for their membership (Case Collectors Club claims 19,000+ members, according to their site). But, as mentioned earlier in this thread, most of the discussion on their site will lean pretty heavily in the 'fans of Case' direction. I get the sense sometimes, in browsing there, much of the truly 'honest' input we might see here on BF, about Case, wouldn't likely be tolerated as well over there. I don't blame them for that. But, in terms of really learning all one can about Case's knives and the pros & cons of owning or collecting them, I feel sites like BF will present a more complete & balanced spectrum of knowledge & experience with Case's knives and many, many others.

I've occasionally been able to mine some nice tidbits of knowledge about Case knives from their own forum or from their CCC mailings, such as input from the company's own staff about history of the company or details about steel they use. But, even in saying that, I haven't spent a lot of time perusing their forum site, as I always feel I can learn much more over here, most of the time. There are some people, here and anywhere else, whom will be strongly biased one way or another about Case's products. But I still feel one can't really get a clear & accurate picture of what Case is selling, unless both the good and bad are seen and viewed with an open mind. The more complete 'truth' will always be somewhere in the middle, between those extremes.
