Hey guys,

I will make this quick. I have never had problems with stag. I am just curious though, why lemon oil? I have found a few threads mentioning it but no real reasoning. Thanks for anyone who can help me out with an explanation.

I don't treat my stag, for Ivory I use food grade mineral oil. Thanks.

Lemon oil, mineral oil, motor oil, no oil is good for stag. It soaks in and softens and discolors it.
Oil does nothing for ivory except make it slick.
Use paste wax for both materials, use lemon oil for furniture, and use mineral oil as a laxative.

Okay, I will keep with my "do nothing" technique with my stag :)

For my ivory, I was told to use mineral oil once in a while from an ivory dealer. He told me since the ivory is not stabilized the mineral oil will help hold in the natural oil. I put a light coating and wiped it off a few years ago. I guess I will just leave them alone from now on as well.

Thanks for the quick response.

I heard it said that WD 40 (used very lightly) would help sambar handles. Don't know if this is accurate or not given the info already posted. I favor micarta handles and even Res-C grips. Stag is wonderful on the eyes though.

Ivory doesn't contain any oil naturally. It's a tooth.

FWIW You shouldn't use citrus oils on bare skin or anything that will be handled a lot. It's pretty nasty stuff and can be absorbed through the skin.
