Why mirror finishing S30V is a real pain

Man, giving S30V a mirror finish is real pain in the behind:grumpy::mad:. That's the most stubborn SOB:mad: steel I've ever encountered. Why is that anyway? I am sure knifemaker faces this problem. It took me 30mins to give the pommel and the spine that finish and it's not even a complete one. Carbon steel will take half of that time.

Sorry for the crappy pics as I used my hands to give that finish and it hurts now. :grumpy:

You think that's tough? Try spending 3+ hours on the entire blade with a full set of abrasives on buffing wheels. I still didn't manage to get all the 600 grit scratches out of there yet, and so I might have to redo some of it.

Once your 600 gets really worn then put a liquid polishing compound on the 600 and go again, then a quick buff with white compound should bring it up.

Vanadium , that's why !! And that's why they developed CPM S35VN !
If you weren't such a narcisist you wouldn't need a mirror polished blade !

Now you know why Benchmade quit making the S30V Switchback! (And the 210TK)

The polished blade looks real pretty though.

I happen to love shiny objects. Did you say you did the polsihing by hand? I mean did you use Flitz or something similar and kept working on it?

You could do like a long time friend and well known knifemaker on this forum does. When they order for something you don't want to build, Just tell them "you can't git that here" you will have to find you another maker that does that, thar you are looking for. He never gits caught up.....................and don't shine no steel either....................
Just a though...........

Why would you need to mirror finish S30V?

Cuts much better when done to the factory bevel.
