Why Multiple Of The Same Knife?

One thing that has always confused me is why many people like getting multiple of the same knife. I see many reviewers on youtube and members here that have many of the same knife. Like if they like the military, they have 3 yet all are the same handle material, blade etc. Like say nutnfancy on youtube gets like 6 enduras. What is the point of this. Like i know some people really like a knife but wouldn't you rather use that money to expand your collection to different knives rather then multiple of the same?

If someone liked a knife enough, they may want multiples in case the company takes them out of production. I have had multiples before of a knife. One for deployment, where it may get lost/stolen/broken, and the other for at home.

1) We are full of angst and emotional turmoil. 2) We buy knives to distract ourselves from the pain, and to temporarily anesthetize ourselves from the world. 3) We end up with multiples.

I'm OCD about my knives... so if i buy two. i have one that I can look at and maybe even resell as new when knife becomes rare or discontinued, and then I use the second as an edc so i won't feel bad about scratching it up a little.... it's a disease that most all other knife guys can relate too.

There comes a point where you find a knife that you love, and, while you never expect the original, you like it so much that you would like to have another one around. it is just a preference thing. also, it might be that these are sprint runs and the people know that they might never get another chance to get one and so they try to buy more than one because they love the original knife and the extras just make it perfect. it all depends on the person.

I always buy two if it's a knife I intend to carry: one to use, and one to put away in the collection.

I only have 3 Millies but each one is in a different steel(s30v, s90v, and cpm 4). That's why I have multiples of the Millie.

BTW there are guys on the Spydie forum that have a lot more that 3 Millies. Yab has about 10.

There's a thread on the Spydie forum right now with pics of multiple Millies.

Bladeforums: Knife discussion, Wacky Antics, and Psychoanalysis all in one place.

I have two Cyclones and two Orange Manix 2's. I use one of each and keep the others new in the box because neither of these knives are in production any more and I want a back-up in case something should happen to the ones I use. That, in addition to any deep-seeded psychological issues I may or may not have, is why I have multiples of the same knife.

Lots of good answers so far. I usually always purchase 2 of a knife I really like. As Yablanowitz once suggested, "It's not a safe queen, it's a preneed replacement". What if you had a really nice knife with a steel you thought was the best ever, and you lost the knife, broke the knife, had the knife stolen, it was confiscated, you gave the knife away, etc.? Maybe you would not really care, maybe you would just go buy another knife and not worry about it. Not everyone has the same level of appreciation for a cutting tool as many of us do. There are more people that would think we absolutely nuts for spending $500 on a knife, some people flip out when I tell them how much I paid for my Kershaw Leek. Either you are a knifenut/collector/user or you are not.

I have 9 Militarys so I guess I'm closing in. BTW, none of them are duplicates. ;)

I have 4 ZDP-189 Delicas and I'll buy any more that I come across if the price is right. For my needs the Delica is a perfect EDC knife and I really like ZDP-189 as a EDC blade steel. In my experience it seems that every time I find something that works nearly perfect, whether its a knife or a pair of jeans that fit just right, that item becomes impossible to find so buying multiples is just a smart move in my world.

If I like a knife, I always get two. One for carry & one for the collection.

If I really like a knife, I start collecting variations of steel, slabs and color.

+1 to pretty much everything that has been said so far. Additionally, one other reason I sometimes get multiples (e.g., of the Buck Vantage Pro) is so I can experiment with/compare different edge angles while holding steel/heat treat, blade geometry, and so forth constant.

I buy 2 of every knife I think I will like. I also usually buy sprint runs with higher end steel. If I don't like the knife it goes in the safe and usually with the sprint runs they hold their value and I can use them to sell or trade for a different knife that might be hard to come by unless you also have something hard to come by. If I like it then I have a back up in case I lose one. If I really like it I will try to get even more to hoard. I have 6 Benchmade Rift because it is my all time favorite knife that I have come across so far. One in black G10, one in 2 tone G10, one in carbon fiber, and I tracked down 3 of the limited edition with M4 blade steel which one is my EDC and always in my right front pocket. I have 13 Manix 2 because I was trying to collect all of them until there were just too many for me to afford. I bought 2 of each except for the moon glow which I was only able to get 1. Since I stopped collecting them I will probably start selling/ trading at least all the duplicates and maybe even all of them. I have my user S90V model with carbon fiber and none of the others top it IMO.

In a way it is almost an addiction because I have told myself I have no need for a safe full of unused knives but when a sprint run comes out that will quickly disappear that I think I will like I can't help myself from buying 2 (or more occasionally). I am also disabled and can't work so knives end up using a good chunk of the little bit of money I do have which really doesn't make sense. I guess I would rather have a knife that will last a life time than go out to a restaurant 2 or 3 times which I will only have for about 12 hours. Plus when I used to drink I could easily buy a knife for what I would spend on a crazy night on the town.

Yeah this is the disease I have.
I just bought two benchmade Bedlams.

+1 exactly!

I edc a tenacious. Great knife for the price. One day it went missing. I went through the usual routine:
1. Looking everywhere it could be expected to be
2. Falsely accusing people of stealing it
3. Buying a replacement because I wouldn't do without
4. Finding out that it had itself transferred to my seatbelt and ended on the left of my car seat.

Now I have two. I think this is a derivative of Murphy's law. Bloody clips...

Could not agree more.
