Why no "Build your own" Spyderco?

Wouldn't it be nice if Spyderco had a "build your own" program for certain models?

Just ordered a mini-grip through Benchmade's program, and it was nice to be able to customize my blade, scales, screws, clip, etc. Yes, you wind up paying retail for this service, but it's nice to order a new knife exactly the way I want it.

If Spyderco had a similar program, odds are, I would have ordered another Spyderco instead of a mini-grip.

Meh. If day-to-day operations are not already busy enough for them, I think it would add an extra layer of complexity to things that would probably slow them down quite a bit. Also, why pay the additional 40% (full retail) to get green G10 scales instead of brown ones? To the self-initiated, there are already methods in place to do that on some of the models. Too, if I want something truly customized, as opposed to just a different "option", I have a better chance of doing it by going to outside providers, for unique scales (perhaps even designed by me) or unique clips or maybe even unique screws. It opens up the world of possibilities.

Warranty would be tricky, but sell it as a kit. Handles, hardware color options, steel options, DLC option :D, maybe even clip hole placement, all in pieces. I'd pay premium for that.

i like benchmade and bucks custom build. change what blade steel, finish...its more than just what color scales. cant so easily and cheaply change your blade to different steel by mods and aftermarket parts

im guessing if it made financial and business sense spyderco would have already done it. so unlikely but only spyderco could answer that.

Has it been six months already? My, how time flies.

Where's the "beating a dead horse" smilie?

It took five years to adulterate the Native and give it a white-devil compression lock.

So I don't get how the five years of real life can be skipped to indulge every fantasy. Functional knives are not mad of legos
