Why no glass breaker on the RC-4/6

The subject pretty much says it all. I have the new RC-3, and think it's a great knive. One of the "improvements" it listed over the origional RAT-3 was the glass breaker, just curious why that improvement didn't get added to the RC-4 and RC-6. :) Then again, maybe I'm just remembering something wrong.

The RC-3 style and size is big with the LEO and military guys that want a small, lightweight fixed blade. One of the improvements that many wanted over the RAT-3 was a glass breaker style pommel, longer handle and better sheathing...the RC-3 is a result of that. The RC-4 is basically the outdoor model of the RC-3, with it's 3/16" thickness and longer length. Most outdoorsmen do not want a glass breaker on their knife. Same with the RC-6.

I was glad to see it missing. I don't care for it, but it is not obtrusive. I am, however, glad that it met the need for LEO--we need to take care of them.

I'm one of those (many?) who are very glad there is no glass breaker/rib poker pommel on the RC4 & 6.

I like to keep a 5" knife tucked under my seat when I go driving in the mtns. When I lived in Idaho we used to drive along Anderson Dam, which was a lake created out of an canyon, so very steep cliffs. Always slightly concerned about sliding off the poorly kept dirt road into the lake, so I like that knife tucked away to have a glass breaker. A very random low probability, yes of course. *shrug* I don't think the glass breaker negatively impacts the knife, except if you're trying to use the pommel as a hammer. While these knives can be used as a hammer, don't seem to be focused in that direction either, so just curious. *shrug*

I do like the glass breaker pommel on the RAT5, and on the RC3. But, I have no doubt that you'd be able to break out a side window w/ a rounded RAT pommel as well. I keep my RAT7 under the seat of my Explorer for worst case scenarios as well.

I'd like to see a RAT tool - eventually - that has a hooked seatbelt cutter and glass breaker on it - I'd surely get one for each of our vehicles.

I think most LEO, use their Maglite or a baton to break a window, less chance of getting cut on glass & more weight = less force required !

I'm sure that this varies a lot - but I don't even carry a baton and find that most guys around here have opted for the TASER to take its place on their duty belts. Duty carried flashlights are also getting smaller and smaller. Streamlight Stingers were common for several years - and they're pretty small - now my Stinger is a big clunker compared to what a lot of guys are carrying lately (granted, most of the guys here do have their baton and a mag light in the vehicle).

I'd mostly like to have a tool like that in my wife's and my vehicles, though. Getting the family out of the car would be worth some cut up fingers!

I used to work EMS and we carried spring loaded center punches to break tempered glass.

I have a glass breaker on my edc knife a MOD Mark I. Which I bought in my youthful ignorance. But I have a Res-Q-Me thingy on my keychain got a razor blade to cut seatbelts and a spring loaded glass punch on it. As to RC anything they put out I will pretty much buy when I have the money at this point.

That's mighty nice of you, sir! We appreciate each and every customer we have.

Sharp pommels on outdoors knives make me hurt myself. Even knives with poorly finished quillions, like the traditional Ka-Bar often have the same effect, usually when the knife is sheathed, or being deployed. A well formed handle and a useful choil will keep you from cutting yourself (if used properly), without things getting in the way. The RC-3 is great, but the glass-breaker is getting ground off as soon as I get one.

Easy then man, get a RC-3 with a rounded pommel. I do not find that the unsharpened one on my 3 gets in the way anyway, even with the pommel palmed hard.

I have a modded tail cap for my 2 D Cell maglite, and for my AA maglite to use as glass breakers.... never occured to me to use my RC-3 for it... but then again, 99% of the time have the Izula with me, not the RC-3. But having it there took absolutely nothing away from the knife when I used it for the PSK contest.

I would be a little scared whipping out a RC-6 in a tight area and doing a hard strike on glass, LOL; it's a lot of knife. The RC-3 seems like a great "handy sized" knife to do that with in a limited space type environment. :)

I am all for a glass breaker though, and a knife with both a glass breaker and serrated edges for cutting a seat belt is a good thing, an RC-3S can do all of that and more!
