I took a few of my bucks out today and just got to thinking about how through the years I have always loved Buck knives. Now I admit that I'm not an exclusive one brand type person. I do often rotate between Case, Buck and Eyebrand as far as my pocketknfe goes. Hunting knives I rotate between my Buck Vangurad s30v and some Bark Rivers. But I always have a Buck 110 on me. For the past almost 3 years its been a S30V stag 110. I love the s30v and Buck combination. As I was looking over a couple of 303s I got to wondering why Buck hasnt used s30v in the 300 series yet? It seems to me it would be an awsome knife. Especially if they did it in a nice wood like rosewood thats on the BP 110.

S30V has been slow to make its way into all slippies by all the manufacturers. I think there's probably been the perception that slip-joint owners won't pay the kind of money it would ne necessary to charge. That may be slowly changing, but then again, with the liquidation of CPM in a few weeks, it may be too late.

I wasnt aware of that with cpm. So what will happen then if a s30v knife breaks?????? I really wish Buck would do a slippie in s30v. I mean when you look at the price of Bucks s30v knives they are in my opinion very reasonable.

I'm not sure what you mean by your question. Regardless, depending on the sale of assets on September 21, there may or may not be any more S30V in the world (or any of their other products, for that matter). For now, all anyone can do is wait and see what happens.

You just made me think if down the road a s30v blade broke and there is no one making s30v what would happen?

KyHunt,

Your not the only person interested in a premium steel slippie. I to jumped ship and bought a very nice Case 4 1/4 picked bone trapper in ATS-34. I've been lusting after a Wrangler of Stockman with upgraded steel and full flat grind blades for some time.

If Crucible is liquidated and ceases operation its a fair bet that Hitachi will ramp up ATS-34 production as will other premium steel makers. Since the demand for S30V seems to be well established. another steel company could bring it back to production as S30V or try to copy it (likely will try to copy rather than pay for S30V rights...liquidated companies rarely protect their rights). We'll see. But all this talk is a little premature since the company is not liquidated yet. Maybe the current administration will get into the steel business as it did with Autos and Banking who knows.

In anycase, I'll be highly interested in what premium steel Buck will use if Crucible's steels go away. Remember that Crucible makes 154cm, CPM-154, and CPM-S30V. I don't believe any of Sandvik's steels are replacements for those three steels.

Anyway, it's an interesting discussion.

Bear,
Great link! I would also love to see AG and Buck be able to pull that together! I'll sign up for one now.

Interesting.

Just for the record, I want to point out that I would never give out anybody's e-mail address unless they had already posted it on the forum themself, which is the case with A.G.

Yes, Buck is doing (or perhaps has completed) a special project for AG Russell - a canoe pattern with s30v steel. AG Russell had a very limited number of them (perhaps 3? - I cannot recall) at the 2009 Blade Show and they were taking orders for them.
Several months ago, the BCCI inquired of Buck about the possibility of a 301 or a 303 with premium steel blades. We were asked to be patient and wait because they were already working on a similar project for a dealer and were dealing with the problems inherent when combining higher Rockwell blades and lower Rockwell backsprings that need to have more flex. It seems the blades were eating up the backsprings in simulated long-term testing. As it turned out, that project was the AG Russell canoe.
