okay i started my first post here long ago on why not an xl 4" bladed vantage size knife. didnt come back for awhile. played with my 110s and other bucks like i always have. then came back years later on the 916. decided to hang around cause of some real good friendly and helpful folks here with a lot of knowledge and wondeful collections of some of the best knives ever made in america for the price points.

so been eyeballing the 916 again. problem is the handle size is almost silly thin and short for the size of the blade. why isnt the handle an inch or so longer and much wider so the blade can be used to its full ability? i assume some sort of historical significance for a particular bowie knife this one is based off of, and if its something like that i get it. why not a more usable version. call it a 917 or whatever number isnt already used up and make it with a better handle size?

back to my original question. buck makes some longer folders and big handled fixed blades. so bigger isnt a no no with buck and its traditions. why cant we see a bigger handled 916 and bigger modern style folders from buck other than a few? no real market for them? other reasons?

thanks for any insight and opinions on the topic.

shame. those folding kalingas are nice. prices ive seen are high as they've become collectibles. is what it is.....sure would be nice if made currently at reasonable prices vs. collectible prices.

Monkey,

I agree it would be awesome to see a larger handle on these 916s. They did a leather handle for BPS a few years ago that was a bit larger. Here are a few 916 photo's to help folks with a visual of handle size. If I can find some time I'll pull these out for a better group shot as the stand shots makes the knives not truly look the actual size.

wonderful collection Sir. yep that pic of yours was shown to me and says alot about the handle size.

I've not handled one of those bowies before. I had no idea how small they really are. I know its a 7.5" blade, but the long clip really makes it anemic for its length

^good point Sir.

i still feel a bigger longer handle would be more useful regardless though.

John, how about a pic of the 916 and a 124 for comparison, thanks. Preston

^good idear. its hard to see how thin and short the handle on the 916 really is by itself.

I'd like to see a comparison photo as well.

I'm guessing it's the length of a 120 with a handle the size of a 102. Really odd for anything other than decoration...

Today is my Saturday so here is your 124-vs-916 comparison photo's. I did discover that my memory if the stacked leather handle size was wrong, it maybe 1/4" longer not enough to fill the bill.

thank you Sir. that shows how small the 916 handle truly is. thanks for posting. beautiful knives by the way.

Thanks, John, I'd be interested in the 916 if the handle was more the size of the 124. Yes, there are a few fellows that could make it happen. I'm just not sure if I like the shape of the 916's blade that much. I like the over all shape and size of the the 124. It's gone a bit towards being larger in size, in recent years and more block-like. Preston
