Why not slotted screws in knife handles?

I am wondering why there is such a prevailance of hex screws used in knife handles. It would seem in my limited knowledge that a slotted screw would be a lot more user friendly. If the screws on a knife start to loosen up in the field or you need to remove the scales for cleaning etc. you need to have an allen wrench.:grumpy: I don't know about you but I generally do not carry an allen wrench but I do have a slotted screw driver on my Leatherman which I carry constantly. Sure I could make sure I have the appropriate allen wrench on me when I go out, but then I would lose it or forget it at home. And besides I don't want to have to pack around one more item with a singular purpose.:(

Some knives have 'em

I'd use slotted on everything, if I could.

Ethan Becker likes hex cap screws for the handles on his knives, for their strength. I switch them out and fit slotted screws, and keep band-aids and matches under the scales. I can remove them with the screwdriver on my Victorinox Huntsman.

Based on most of the 'modern' knives I have, most are actually Torx (not hex). Having said that, I sort of cringe to think of how many complaints we'd see about stripped heads on slotted screws, when users try to disassemble them (presumably Loctited in place, as many are from the factory). If slotted screws weren't so prone to stripping the heads, I'd prefer 'em too. Since my knives don't have 'em, I just picked up a multi-bit Torx driver (and a spare) and don't worry about it anymore.

Thanks, makes sense to me.

Slotted heads would require a much larger head to allow the torque that a torx head can endure without stripping.

yeah and if you kept the heads the same size, you would be using a knife blade or terminating screwdriver to get them out...
