hello all. i am new to this forum and in a very short time of reading articles ive realized a few things. one of which is a lot of people on here dislike smith and wesson knives. I have several smith's, somewhere in the teens, and my experience has been a positive one. most of the ones i own have been very good, if not excellent, knives for the money! i think dollar for dollar they would be hard to beat! their locks are strong and positive. their blades are usually very sharp straight from the box. their designs are appealing and user freindly. now, i know they are made in china or somewhere and i do usually try to buy american when i can, but, i most certainly am not rich and cannot afford $50.00 bucks a pop for a new knife every week or so. i do have a few benchmades, bokers, bucks, kershaws, ontarios, and such, but they cost me so much i usually dont carry them for fear of damaging the blades or loosing the knife. smith knives prices allow me to buy a new knife every once in a while and i am as excited with it as i would have been with a 50 dollar one. and if i do damage the knife or blade, hey, it only cost me a 10 spot or so. if i loose it, which i am good for, i can replace it without spending half my paycheck! am i the only one who enjoys smith and wesson knives? i would love to hear you guys opinion and experience with smiths.,,,VWB.

Keep thinking that way and avoid being broke like the rest of us. Quality knives are not really that important in the whole scheme of things. Invest the money you'd have put in knives and I'll join you in the sky box at the Superbowl in 10 years. Deal?

enjoy whatever ya got, if you like them and they work for you then to hell with whatever anybody else thinks! at the end of the day we are all similar we collect and appreciate knives. everybody has different price points.
i have a similar soft spot for my two gerbers, even though gerber gets trashed alot.
enjoy the hell out of them!
cheers

Try saving some of that small change you come home with everyday.Pitch a buck or two in the jar when your thinking about it.
Many people have lost the "piggy bank" concept and miss out on $2-$300 worth of "mad money" every year because of it :jerkit:
Depends on what you want most ?
Very Cool well made knife,or 5-6 new release DVD rentals per week ?
It doesnt take long to see where one piss's off the small $2-$10 purchases in a months time, spread that across 6 months and your answer is pretty clear as to why you "Dont Have"

IMPO its best to enjoy wearing stuff out before you die !

My $.0¼ on Self Control

Absolutely!!! If we all liked the same knives there'd be no knife industry, just one maker/model. Everyone's entitled to there own opinion - and that includes you. David

Nothing wrong with S&W knives at what they cost.
None of my pocket knives are expensive compared to some that are out there.
I use most of my knives regularly.
Some of my favorite knives are my cheaper ones like my Ka-Bar Dozier it cost about $20 and I love it.

I had two smiths, one was a cheaper model with the steel "framelock" another one had g-10 handles and a relativley thick liner. Now the framelock I had was junk...did not hold up well the edge was VERY thick and would not cut well. There was some blade play etc, but it was given to me so I still have it. The 2nd one was a suprise to say the least, its chisel ground but with a good grind and came very sharp. No blade play and F&F were decent for money I spent.

My problem comes with them comes when I look at my Kershaw DWO III or my JYDII or Scallion or Leek and they are just better knives, and I can afford them. Most of those knives are 50 or under as long as you dont get a premium steel leek. To me i'd rather save the extra few bucks and buy a kershaw or buck or spyderco or whatever and get a better feeling knife that in my experience holds a better edge and has better grinds.

This is not to knock anyone, just my opinion. I support anyone who enjoys collecting and using knives regardless of brand.

The only Smith and Wesson I ever had was given to me.It was a piece of junk. Sorry, but Chinese made knives don't appeal to me. Most if not all are crap. i would rather save and wait to buy something decent. $50.00 isn't a lot of money and you can get a very decent knife in that range. You can get a SAK for even less than that and they are very nice.

Of the Smith & Wesson knives I've seen, my main concern is their lock-up. A lot of their liners are very flimsy. Perhaps there are exceptions to this, but make sure your knives lock up solid.

I'm not advising you to start collecting Sebenzas, though.

I started my collection in college, and I'd think twice before spending $20 on a knife. The most I have ever spent on a knife is $75, and I thought about that a while before I did.

Other 'tactical' knives in the S&W price range would include:
- Spyderco's Byrd line ($15-20)
- lower-end, older CRKT knives (14K series, Kasper folder, Pointguard)

Visit your local pawn shop - you may get some great deals there.

very well put

I had one given to me. At the time it retailed for about 70. I used it for years. Actually still have it. It was a great knife. The cheaper ones are good to use as dispoables in my turnout gear.

I'm not familiar with the S&W knife line but buy what you like.

I agree with JAG that there are a lot of decent knives out there in the $15-$25 range. And with some smart shopping, you can find some great sales at your local big box retailer. In the last few months I picked up all of these knives on sale or on clearance:

CRKT M16-13Z $19.00
Buck 112 Commerative Tin $15.00
Buck Mantis $6.00
Buck Diamondback $5.00
Buck 110 $19.00 (after a $10 rebate)
CRKT Crawford Falcon folder $15.00
Buck Approach $15.00

Even at regular prices, there are deals to be found. For instance Wally World has the Buck 110 for $26.88 and Kershaw Storm II for $29.00 every day. They are both quality, US made folders with great warranties and customer service.

Just a heads up, I noticed that my local Kmart had 50% off all their S&W knives last weekend. The sale may still be on....

Good info messersmith....OH dont forget about Opinels those are some sweet cutters too, not your typical folder but cut like the dickens.
