why pins?

Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but why are pins used to join the handles to the blades on balisongs? What if each handle had a top and bottom half and there was some kind of bearing mechanism or bushing attaching to the blade? This would eliminate latteral blade play, right? Has this been done on high end balis? How hard would it be to make something like this?

Well i would suspect the main reason that it hasn't been done so far is production costs... All of the cheapo knives, even jags, are manufactured extremely cheaply. Bearings or bushings would just add to cost. If you think about it most balis are very simple. If you read down the forum you'll read that the new knife that microtech is designing is doing exactly what you mentioned: using a bushing to illiminate play in the handles. I really can't wait to try it. I would really like to see small ballbearings in the handles and blade... With some grease in 'em they would be really smooth feelin : )-

Hey there,

I posted the same thread about a month or so ago, and was told that some other custom guys have tried it, but $$$$$$$!!!!!!

People also said that it isn't any faster than their BM42's
