There are craftsmen out there making superb knives, swords and axes etc Many are using high grade steel. My question is, why are certain manufacturers powder coating their blades ?

For knives with less stain resistant steels it's often for rust prevention. When stainless steels are coated my guess is it's usually about marketing or a more saleable aesthetic. In a few cases makers actually cater to military and law enforcement needs in which case minimizing reflection might be a factor. I daresay the last would be the exception not the rule.

You know, you're absolutely correct to ask about what good it does
In having present day coating technology on knives.
Considering that very few finishings can remain unblemished for long....
so yeah, it seems very cosmetic.
and like any make up, just how many times must a fashionable girl powder up
just to touch up marred spots in a day?...
Looks like knife coating technology is very much a work in progress.
and so far, the better ones seem to be economically out of reach for general consumption.

Rust, tactical needs, some folks just like their blades coated. I have ESEE knives and they coat their knives to prevent rust of the 1095 steel. It holds up pretty well.
I have a Woodlore clone made of O1 that I cold blued to keep it from rusting. I know DLC coatings are fairly durable.
