Why put a lanyard hole on a tip down folder?

I guess I use lanyards to make it easier to pull a tip up folder out of my pocket but is there an actual use for one on a tip down knife? Other than looks?

I put lanyards on smaller tip-down knives that I can't fit all my fingers on -- it gives me something else to grip. Also, I'll sometimes put a bright-colored lanyard on a knife to make it easier to find if dropped or even just when it's mixed in all the clutter on my dresser.

But for a knife like the Paramilitary, which is tip down and has enough room for 6-7 fingers, I don't bother.

That's what I was thinking too. Most of my tip ups have lanyards, none of my tip downs do. (I don't have anything too small in folders that I carry to need the extra length.)

Does anyone use them around the wrist on midsize folders? Besides guys on boats?

Maybe from high places where a long drop might do harm.

Lanyards is a pretty big far reaching term. Do you mean monkey fists, sonnets, a couple knots on a piece of paracord? I've got lanyards made by Maddaddy on my Benchmade Grip and 710, CRK lanyards on my Sebenzas, and a little job with three knots made from a stretch of paracord on my Manix. Big big sweep.

Good place to put a very small flashlight (since then it sits inside the pocket) !

Speaking of lanyards, any good websites where I can find some cool and out of the ordinary lanyards? Thanks.

i like a knife with a lanyard.easyer to pull from the pocket, when working in the snow nothing worse then serching thru cold slush with fingers so cold they are numb for a razor sharp knife. and if i am ever in a place where i want to lash my knife to a shaft for a spear or to cut something i cant reach a lanyard hole is a good place to start

I remember Doug Ritter saying somewhere in an Equipped to Survive review that he wouldn't recommend any folder without a lanyard passage for outdoor survival use. If you're a hundred miles from your next knife, security is nice.
