Why Serrations ??

If you look at some of the recent knives we have come out with, notably the Flying Tiger and the Flying Mojo, you will notice they are "adorned" with unique serrations toward the front of the blade.

I have often been asked of late as to whether they really improve performance. The answer is "No" and "Yes"!

These serrations do not improve chopping performance, nor do they hinder it. Due to their shape and design they will not get stuck in whatever it is you are chopping, like normal serrations have a tendency to do. But the knives we have put them on are not really choppers, they are fighters.

Jerry has long believed that serrations are in the wrong place. For a fighter, you want the serrations on the front of the blade. Why? Well just like the old Ginsu knives were able to cut through anything, our "Flying" serrations would make short work of a leather jacket or equally heavy clothing or canvas material that would otherwise repel the sharpest blade. Our serrations, besides looking very aggressive, are VERY AGRESSIVE.

Just like the Combat line can win just about any cutting or chopping contest on this planet, they will likewise win any contest that simulates stabbing. So the next time someone pokes fun at these curious looking blades with their unique serrations, remember, they are not just for show, they are for real !

I'll vouch for those serrations being sharp ;):D

My FT has the definite feel of a fighter, lightweight, quick, sharp and it doesn't hurt that it looks mean ;):D

Chip,
How do you think I found out mine were sharp, cut my tongue, now I look like a lizard ;);):D

Should I have Jerry put them on the top of my Machete?

Jerry, you better break out the file and warm up them fingers! :D

Contender, thanks for the info. I figured Jerry wouldn't have put them on if they weren't functional, but you confirmed and explained it well. How about a BAT with serrations?

Contender,

Thanks for the lesson on Busse serrations! You have confirmed what I thought.

That is why I have been thinking about how great they would be on a BA. I know the PBF series is supposed to be the fighters in the family, but for my hand the 4" KB is to thin to get the grip I want(big hands) and even with that sweet cord wrap, I feel like it would slip in my hand under Adrenalized stress. Plus the roundness of the handle does not give you the purchase neede to torque the blade from the handle after the blade has been buried to the hilt in something. Now the E-series handles on the other hand, if your hand is large enough for them, are perfect IMHO for a fighter. They remind me of Jerry Hossom's handles. They are comfortable, fill your hand, secure, wide enough to give you something to twist and torque in your hand if need be, and the curv down as the handle moves to the base allows you to "choke-back" on these handle and let it mate with the palm of your hand at the base of the thumb. This makes a strong base for driving home a stabbing thrust. Again, these are some of the reasons I think the E-series handles make a superior handle for a fighter, and for my needs that's the BA-E. Back to the serrations issue; So many fighter style knives have thin (edge to spine) blades presumably for ease of penetration. Problem is they leave behind smaller, puncture like holes that can close in on themselves instead of leak as intended. Fatter blades(edge-to-spine) due to their wider profile may be harder to insert but will leave bigger holes that are more like wedge shaped slices that should leak better and be harder to stop the leaking, which in this situation is a good thing. This is important enough that i personally think it is worth the extra effort required to insert a fatter, wider blade. Which brings me full circle to the Busse serrations on the front of the blade AND on both the edge and spine, they should reduce the force required to insert a blade like the BA or the NO in a defensive struggle. This would be a good thing in my book and improve the BA-E a bit. And since this is currently both my favorite knife and my defensive carry knife, I would love to improve an already awesome piece of nuclear cutlery.

Marc --- THANKS for the info; some of us thot they looked cool enough, but wondered if it were "just showy;" nice to know the function is real: real SCARY, that is!
Yep, they look like they'd peel more than banana-skins...!!!
