Why 'sterile' blades?

What makes a blade 'sterile'- is it just because it's missing the logo? Why are there some with and some without? Is there some advantage to a sterile blade?

In my mind, if I buy a Busse then I'd prefer it says that somewhere on it. Am I thinking the wrong way?
Thanks in advance.

-YES
-Some are military overruns, some unmarked due to the lazer engraver being INOP, some requested w/o marking. In case you didn't know under the grip plates the tang IS MARKED, granted it's not visable unless you remove the scales but it there.
-NO
I happen to like some unmarked but most are marked in my toy box. So no, your not thinking wrong. It's all good Bro.

Yup, "sterile" means "without logo" and there are no other differences.

In many countries public authorities don't allow brand names to be visible on their official equipment and ask vendors to remove their logos. Often there are compliance reasons, e.g. when public authorities are not allowed to advertise products of private companies by showing off logos. Hence the "sterile equipment" that you find in all possible product categories from clothes, coffee pots, watches, tents, mousetraps,...

I'm not aware of the precise regulations in the US but can imagine that Busse is asked to provide sterile versions of their knives when they supply public authorities like military, law enforcement, firefighters, etc. The sterile versions we are offered might simply be leftovers from these production runs.

Disclaimer: this is how I connect the dots. If somebody knows better I stand corrected.

While deployed to Iraq, we had to remove any brand labels that could be removed, black out any that could not or cover any that were engraved. I'm with RussMo, some just look better sterile.....some look better marked. Either way, its all about the knife.

Given the Strength of Style Recognition and Trade mark Features Give some thought to the idea that Sterile is also cheaper to produce, Before the Laser Engraving it was also Complicated to put lasting Brand Names on a Coated knife, thus you find Branding or Logo on the spine, or Handle and Even that Rarely, Busse knives with a Logo made between certain dates Command a Premium and even the Logo used makes a Difference, there are a few knives made after 2000 that have an 80's Logo, mostly one offs Designating a knife as first or some time as only, makes it easier for the Factory to keep Track of.

And of course theres just some that prefer sterile blades for some reason or another, like not haveing a bushcraft blade say combat on it. Or the reason I was give, to make piglets ask why :D

One blessing of sterile kit is that "sticky handed comrades" might not know what you've got and how valuable it is ... although sometimes just having a knife that is "razor sharp" is enough to get it pinched ... I lost a khukri like that ... you'd be suprised how many soldiers cannot sharpen a knife and are happy to steal one when their's is blunt ... or they don't have one ...

Retreiving pinched gear can lead to some ugly situations too ... so avoiding "gucci" labels helps ... but the real reason is "intel" ... some Einstein probably thought no labels would assist in confusing the enemy should you get captured ... forgetting that in most cases the weapon systems themselves are a dead give away ... that and tatoo's ... even your dental filings can I.D. your country of origin if you're in a bad place and they start on your teeth ... :D

Gulf War I had more than a few of our guys glad they were'nt circumsized ...

Anyway ... the short answer is "intel" ... which means it makes no difference one way or the other usually :D

Here are two for your viewing pleasure. An Active duty "Heavy Duty .195" and a SJTAC "Mole Jack".

All great theories but I think it is from too much radiation from the nuclear treatments that happen at the shop.

I have an FBM LE that I asked to be sterile, didn't want it to reproduce anymore

I also have an SHBM LE that is sterile

Now my wife wants me to be sterile. But I figure if my mistresses are sterile, why should I be?

Well I could tell you but then I'd have to.......... uhh you know what I mean.

Wow the topic has changed alot!!!

Yes it has gotten off track somewhat...I think my question has been answered quite thoroughly and I thank all for the assistance. In short, as there appears to be no advantage to me, I will continue to buy blades 'marked' Busse.
